the file for the registry editor is regedit.EXE not regedit.COM.

if you go to start > run and type just regedit, because there is a regedit.com file which normally shouldn't exist and because .com executable files take priority over .exe files (not a lot of people know that) the regedit.com file will be executed - this file may be virus code which is using the .com trick i've described to stop you running the real registry editor or to re-activate the virus by running this fake file.

try using the full filename of regedit.exe, if the real registry editor doesn't appear its not impossible that a possible virus infection has renamed the file to again stop you from running the registry editor in an attempt to remove the infection.

Download SuperAntiSpyware. It will remove the majority of difficult Trojans etc.
http://www.superantispyware.com/

Turn off System Restore. Load the application in normal mode but run in Safe Mode. Safe Mode can be started by continually pressing F8 during the boot sequence.

If you are badly infected you might need to run SuperAntiSpyware more than once to give you a totally clean system.

Assuming SuperAntiSpyware still failed to totally clean your system I suggest you download a Smitfraud removal program from:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/desktop_software/desktop_security/smitfraudfix.cfm

Again run in Safe Mode.

Good luck & safe surfing.
