Shelter is actually not a right in America (don't believe me, look up your real estate law, or I have an attorney you can speak with over the matter ^^). You are also not entitled to food, ie, shopkeepers do not have to provide you with food. Some government subsidy money helps out shelters, and puts people on welfare, but welfare is for a restricted amount of time, and you cannot just "opt" to not work, you have to actively search for a job, or simply be homeless in a shelter with a soup kitchen for food (though even they usually require work in return for food).

Being a free American does not mean you should be given a free ride. Food and shelter can and should be provided temporarily for people who are in dire straights, but not on a permanent basis for the able bodied. For the disabled who can not provide for themselves, we as the richest country in the world have a duty to look after them. Those who can work but do not take away from our resources meant for those who really need it.

i beleive if a transitional type of assistance is required as an American you have probably worked a long time and contributed to the system and never had to use it . I think there is no shame and if I need it / i will accept it . i have paid in all of my life and never taken from it . it's a bank account. many otherpeople have used my money i put away for their and my rainy day. if a rainy day come , that is mine to take a little back as needed. i hope and pray i do not need . but if it happens i will have no problem to accept it if needed.

i do believe if you have contributed to it / you should be able to take when you NEED . no doubt, in American, there are some generations that view this assistance as occupation choices .LOL. I am not that type.

No, you can't collect unemployment or welfare if you just choose not to work(unless you can find a way to scam the system of course) and anyways, you're not going to get housing and with no address they can't send you anything.

The point though is social welfare programs are meant for those who try but can't get ahead, no those who just don't want to do anything. Especially in America, individualism has always been valued in America since colonial days more then anywhere else.

no one is entitled to anything in the u.s.a.. this is the land of the free, not a free place to live, etc.. but there are government agencys that give cash, food stamp, and medical assistance. then homeless shelters, or salvation army for a roof over your head, food, clothes, etc..

I don't understand why your intention is to discredit a successful program that provides a cushion and a bouncing effect for people who has lost all. In thanksgiving day give thanks for what you have and don't worry about what other have, specially if it is less than what you have.

If this isn't some loosely veiled jab at people on public assistance, it sure sounds like one. I know two people who are on public assistance because they are handicapped and your question just sounds mean-spirited and kinda evil.
