I wrote to a well known and much thought of food manufacturer that I had bought their brand of chicken broth packets only to find that half of the packets in the box were not dried powder but stuck together like they had been packaged wet (who knows wet from what?!) and that other packets in the box were completely empty. I never expected to hear back from them, but included my phone number in the letter as a courtesy to them. Imagine my surprise when I received a phone call just days later. The person on the line identified himself as an officer in the company and asked me if I would mind identifying more accurately which batch product I had bought. I read him all of the serial numbers I could identify. He said that as a thank you and an apology the company would be sending me coupons for my use against these and other products. I was further surprised to find a letter arriving within a week bearing those coupons--all of which were for free products, totalling $50 in value! I ended up using them all of course. (As an aside though--continued problems with the packaging of those flavouring packets lead me to drop that brand and start using another. Too bad really, but my new brand tastes the same and has had no packaging problems so what can you do?!) I also bought some rechargeable batteries for my camera from the most reputable maker of these in the industry. (They run commercials that claim they are the most trusted brand.) Unfortunately the batteries I bought had a problem holding charge. Even if fully charged one day, and not used in the interim, when I needed them for use the next day they would work for maybe 10 minutes and then just die. Unfortunately for me, I found out the hard way that these batteries were faulty when my middle grandson graduated, I took my camera along to get shots of the ceremony, and the camera died long before I even made it into the auditorium! When I wrote to them, being most irate and blaming them for loss of pictures I had wished to keep for my lifetime, I told them that I would never consider using their product again! They sent me back a lacklustre letter in which they said that they were sorry to lose me as a customer, and would I please reconsider my decision--including in the letter a coupon for $20 towards a new set of rechargeable batteries. I didn't take them up on their offer, having long since switched over to the bunnies batteries, but I did end up giving that coupon to my youngest grandson to purchase batteries for a handheld device that he got as a Christmas gift that came without them. All these companies that make products for the consumers SHOULD BE worried about our opinions. After all--their livelihood depends on keeping us satisfied, does it not? As an aside here, and to illustrate your "additional details", I wrote to a company that marketed a new salad dressing that was SO GOOD that our whole family just loved it! It was a blue cheese vinaigrette dressing that was just so yummy....and weeks later they were gone from the shelf, never yet to return! Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut that time?
