he pocketed 2 pounds which leaves 3 pounds from the money he gave him so they paid 28 pounds not 27 pounds

There is no missing pound. The original price was £30. Then because of the refund of £5 it was £25. Each student got £1 back so in reality they had paid £27. So you have £25 for the TV and £2 that the sales assistant pocketed. What you have done is ADD the £2 to the £27 they paid instead of subtracting it.

It got lost in your presentation of the problem. They actually paid eight and 1/3 pound each ((30 - 5)/3). The eight and a 1/3 times three + the 3 they got back plus + 2 the clerk pocketed = thirty.

that's a case of illogical logic.
£30 - £5 = £25
£2 (shop keeper) + £1 + £1 + £1 = £5
£25 + £5 = £30

if they paid £9 each then they never had the £5 discount in the first place (£9 + £9 + £9 + £1 (money back) + £1 (money back) + £1 (money back) + £2 (shop keeper) = £32

They didn't pay nine pounds each. They paid thirty pounds, less five pounds discount; that's a discount of £1.66r per student. They only received £1 each, so the sales assistant robbed each student of 66.0p.

This is like counting your fingers by saying "10, 9, 8, 7, 6 and five more is eleven".

They paid 25 (30-5)

Left over is 5 - 3 for each of tehm and 2 for the assistant

It is incorrect logic to say they paid 27 for the TV

it didnt go anywhere.. they technically paid 27 for the tv. and the three went back to them. KEEPING TRACK OF THE MONEY: 30(original price)-5(discount)=25 +2(pocketed money)=27(money lost) and they each got one +3 = 30.
