If you listented to todays new that the HM Revenue and Customs posted the peoples details via unrecored & unsecure methods.
Why on earth would these stupid people who are suposed to keep out data secure go and post it without taking proper security methods?.
Surly they would encrypt these details with the highest possible encryption like lets say the new version of pgp encryption.
Even then they should not have sent it in in unsecured mail.
I would not even send any of my stuff that i trade online out unless it was special delivery and thats you run of the mill stuff these where bank details names addresses national insurance numbers.
Does anyone know if they atleast encrypt the data they send?.
If not then why should we trust them?.
No matter how much i like computers they should not be relied on with our details. What would happen if something was to happen to every computer system in the world? The system replies on computers too much for thier own good.

Passwords can easily be backed but pgp wncryption cant http://www.pgp.com/ i use it and it would take a life time to decode unless you knew the key and thats why only the person at the other end would have the key.

The disc's are supposedly password protected.
But i'm sure a decent hacker could break the password.

The discs need strong encryption (128-bit or higher) for a start, and this would be the obvious thing to do. The password should then be a long string of lowercase & uppercase letters, numbers and symbols. If this has been used, then it will take a hacker some time to crack into it. But if they have used a crap encryption method and a crap password, then it will be broken into in about 5 minutes. As far as I'm aware, the discs "haven't fallen into the wrong hands yet" according to the police. I also heard that the Government knew about this problem for a week before coming clean. So what's really going on is anyone's guess. Let's just hope they have a good I.T department who had the sense to use a strong encryption method.

I do not understand what this encryption is and presume it is some sort of code which can be decoded by a machine at the other end. I think it is actually a blind alley for the moment because codes can always be decoded and the type of repetitive information held on these can be decoded fairly easily. The crux of the matter is that this should have been sent by courier and not sent by post, by courier I mean a civil servant
by a chauffeur driven car with instructions not to stop or get out of the car until it's destination is reached.

They seem to have been very slap-dash in their practice. Well-run companies are very careful about security issues. Possibly some civil servants get into jobs because they are good socially; whereas the more careful candidates get shown the door.

I really wouldn't worry about it too much.
You can make what you like of it, but it's not the end of the world.
The discs may be lying in a van somewhere. People like you are going to jump on this and just be tarts.

i think the whole sorry saga is a complete shambles.
We are supposed to be protected by the data protection actt and the stupid muppets that allowed this to happen should pay each and every one of us compensation.
