I'm putting slate on the floor of our entry. There is linoluem (sp?) there already. Will it hurt to lay slate over top of it?

I don't know whether or not it would *hurt* to lay the slate over the linoleum, but if I were you, I would rip it up. All it takes is a bit of elbow grease, and you've done a much more thorough and complete job.

For some reason it always bugs me when I see people do jobs like that halfway; painting over wallpaper, laying tile over linoleum, etc.

I have to agree with answer 1. After thousands of sq. ft. of tile; I'm bugged so often by answers here that state it's OK to do tile, etc, over OLD flooring. Yes the removal is a minor pain, but so might be the after effects of mortar and slate over a non porous/ non bonding surface.

If you enjoy replacing cracked or broken tiles, leave the linoleum. If you don't want a never-ending tile project the linoleum has to come up!

yea you never know when the linoleum can start to unglue and bubble, curl and then cause your slate to go all out of wack
