b. urinalysis. cheap, easy and gives lots of information.
Checks for urine concentrating ability, protein loss in urine, presence of casts, diabetes, infections, crystal formation, also can detect abnormal cells in some cases eg tumor cells.

give it a dose of hard battle training.
Whip with a knotted rope. If the dog pulls through ok then it is battle hardened and will give you a few more years or ownership with minimal additional training.
If the dog just whimpers too much then you may have to start with smaller weekly training sessions with perhaps a smaller rope.
Or consider some kind of electric shock device in which the charge can be modulated to the desired degree, to realise the reality and essence of hard battle technique.
