Is it to show you when you're supposed to laugh or something? Because it's really annoying....

yea one day I said I was going to laugh everytime the people laugh and I quit because I ran out of breath, that's how much they were laughing

They probably put the fake laughter on just to get people to laugh. Even though fake laughter isn't funny.

Sometimes I think that not having a laugh track is better. I say this because the joke with no laugh track lets you make up your own mind. Canned laughter feels a little forced.

no, it's brain washing. they put the laughter in coz they know that it will make you laugh. if you laugh then you will assume with out really thinking about that you like the show.
ever go to the movie theater and laugh only coz others around you are laughing? same concept.

I really don't know. I think it's just something they all do to make it seem like there is people laughing in the back,or maybe it's just a thing that they want people to laugh at it. LOL :p

its psychology. laughter can be catching. someone, could be stranger, starts to laugh and people around get curious at what he/she is laughing at. then, if they think it humorous, they start to laugh. canned laughter is geared to be lower in sound level than the monologue or dialogue but loud enough to get your attention. yes, it is annoying since most of the humor today isn't truely funny but more insulting, 1 line put downs. i rarely watch sitcoms

yea, and the worst is the old tv shows of the 70's and 80's. And there is always one laugh that stands out more than the other.

They are there to let us know when to laugh because the jokes are funny so we wouldn't know we were supposed to laugh without the canned laugh track.

because they don't want to record the people laughing over and over again but I agree that it is really annoying. Some times you can turn it off but not all the time.

It's to get people in the mood it has been proven that when someone laughs others laugh...same as when you yawn other does too...so its supposed to highlight the points that are meant to be happy.

I don't know, but I've often thought to myself...Would I find this show quite as funny as I do, without the laugh tracks?
