Well first off, it's mostly about leg strength. Some kickers have that leg strength to kick field goals of more than 50 yards, other kickers have more kicking accuracy. Second, you have the wind factor. Sometimes the wind can help carry the ball further along for more distance and thus helping the kicker succeed in kicking a 50+yd field goal. But most of the times, the can push the football back, causing the ball to fall short or it can change the distance of the ball, pushing it away and causing it to be no good. Third, it's hard to concentrate kicking the ball when you have 11 guys much larger than you swarm after you. The defender can get a hand up and tip the ball, causing it to fall short. There you have it, I hope that answers your question. ^^

The 50 yards you are talking about is from the offensive line to the goal line. It's not from the kick to the goal post. So a 50 yard kick is really about 65 yards total.

Then it's about arc and accuracy. To kick it farther, the arc has to be smaller, which increases the chance of a defensive player blocking the play. The distance also decreases the chance of accuracy. The coach might not like the odds and his team would give up valuable field position if the kicker misses. This decreases the chance of the kicker being allowed to kick at such distances. Probably the only chance a kicker would be allowed to kick at that distance was if it was a close game, the final play and the kicker had made one, at least in practice, at that distance.

This is a horrible idea. What's next? Are we gonna start giving teams 8 points for a TD of more than 70 yards or something? C'mon now. Field Goals are 3 points, no matter how long they are. And a 50 yard kick wouldn't turn the ball over in THEIR OWN TERRITORY, a 50 yard kick would be from the 33. It would be practically impossible for somebody to kick a FG from their own territory, as it would have to be a 67 yard field goal.

There is, of course the strength of the kicker. But beyond that that there is the size, weight and shape of the ball. Combine those with simple aerodaymics and unless there are some very specific wind conditions a ball simply will not travel much beyond 50 yards if even that far, and even then, it may not go directly toweards the goal posts, but would, most likely, especially in an open air stadium, go off the mark and miss.

they can...a lot of the time it is a question of accuarcy...plus on a field goal kick the approach the kicker takes to the ball is shorter than a kick off. Add to that outdoor stadiums with the wind and it gets a little hard.

many do. the rams had a kicker,i think in the 70s who kicked a 63 yard field goal. i can't think of his name, but, he had no toes on his right foot and kicked with a square shoe.

uh...rofl they do all the time idk wth you are smoking. From the yard line the ball is at add +18 yards theres your distance: i.e 30 yd line +18 = 48 yd kick. the record is 65. Also wind plays a factor, as do other weather conditions, arc, accuracy and hold. kicking from a tee is much easier than kicking from a holder.
