LOVE is what motivates us as well as the characters in the movie.
Miss Celie is motivated love for her sister and children, without this love she wouldn't have been so strong for so many years.
Love was also Misters' motivation as well. His love for Shug Avery, that is. It's this same love that motivated him to 'keep' Celie as a wife/servant, to show Shug he IS marrying material.
Shug Avery is motivated by the love of her father. Everything she did 'wild' was because of this love. When she finally saw the 'light' it was because of this same love.
Every single character in 'The Color Purple' do what they do in the name of LOVE. Bad love, good love, lost love, unknown love, unrequitted love, etc...
