Tom H is right, as far as he went. As Paul Harvey would say, here is the rest of the story. Eventually there arose a Pharaoh who "knew not Joseph" (he's the guy whose brothers sold him into slavery, as Tom said). The Pharaoh Joseph served wasn't a true Egyptian. He was a Hykso. The Hyksos had conquered Egypt about a century before Joseph's time because they had a modern innovation the Egyptians lacked: the wheel. The Hyksos had chariots, wheeled vehicles that allowed them to cut the Egyptian infantry to pieces. Eventually, native Egyptians re-took the throne and ended the Hykso dynasty. The native Egyptians considered Jews enemy aliens who'd collaborated with their oppressors and forced them from public life and eventually into slavery.

The Israelites went into Egypt because there was a bad famine. The were welcomed becuase, Joseph, who had been sold into slavery by his brothers, was an important person in Egypt at that time, second only to the Pharoah. They then stayed in egypt, and were given land to live on. It was a fertile country and life was easy. Then Bible says that, 'a Pharoah came who did not remember Joseph'. So this was obviously some time later. This pharoah looked at his country and saw this large and growing group of immigrants. He felt they were a drain on the country's resources and a threat to national security. They were forced to work for the Pharoah and there were attempts to reduce their number, (such as killing all male babies).

They didn't.

The bible is a book of fiction and should not be treated as a history textbook.
