If you're putting in a 200 amp service, probably #4, a 100 amp service, #6.

To size the wire you must know the amerage of the main breaker. In the NEC you will go to table 310.15b6 for a single phase service 400 amperes or less. If you were using aluminum it would as follows:
200a 4/0
150a 2/0
100a 2 awg

You need to know what the distance between the boxes are, the type of wire you are using(IE copper,alum) and the amperage of the breaker box. Here is a site with a table and a calculator. Hope this helps
