Since buying this pc (who I bought from one of my friends) I cannot get my microphone to work for msn to talk to my friends. Please can anyone help? I have tried most things that I know of.

What usually causes this is a Mic setting got muted. Look through the windows sound properties and make sure the Mic isnt muted. Then check the sound properties for your soundcard and make sure its not muted there. You can find the sound properties from the control panel or the little seaker icon near your clock. Also make sure the mic you have shows as the default device windows is using for mic if not use the drop menu and choose the correct device.

You don't list the make and model of machine or of your mic so without that info i would say (if none of the settings are muted) check for a driver from the microphones manufacturers website or the update your sound card drivers from the manufacturors site.

hi judy
there could be 2 reasons for this judy and the first is the actual microphone then the other is the soundcard(onboard or dedicated)
first to check the sound card is ok right click my computer then click properties>hardware>device manager>expand the sound, video and game controllers entry and click on the sound card in question,if it says its working correctly then this is fine
now go to start>control panel>sound and multimedia>voice and run the test hardware option, click the button"test hardware" and follow the wizard, some microsphones have a on/of/mute switch, make sure this is on,its easy to make a mistake and leave this switched off
and most mic,s are not the most hard wearing of peripherals, they easily break so try another mic if possible, you can get them very cheaply from http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6750244/Trail/C%24cip%3D1500006463.Office%2C%2BPC%2Band%2Bphones%3EC%24cip%3D1500006471.PC%2Bperipherals%3EC%24cip%3D1500006474.PC%2Bmicrophones%2Band%2Bheadsets.htm for a Mikomi Desktop Microphone.
even better and just as inexpensive a Mikomi Stereo Headset with Volume Control is just £4-95 from http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Browse/catalogId/1500000701/identifier/8963205/languageId/-1/Trail/C%24cip%3D1500006463%3EC%24cip%3D1500006471%3EC%24cip%3D1500006474.htm,this has both the mic and headset and is ideal for talking to freinds on msm and other social networking sites
these types of headsets have 2 x connectors, one for the headset and one for the mic,the mic should go into the "line in" socket on the soundcard/motherboard
the headphone should go into the specific headphone socket, all motherboars and soundcards have one of these with a small headphone next to it
for more instructions about connecting these go to http://www.creative.com/products/speakers/howto/?c=2&sc=2&ssc=3,just click on the relevant link and the tutorial will appear
i hope this helps, however any problems let me know
good luck judy !

Click Start, click Run, type dxdiag, ok. Select Network tab. Click Direct Play Voice Option to test your microphone. If it doesn't work, select Sound tab. Check if your soundcard and driver details are there. If not there, install the driver. If you have no driver CD, download the driver from the website of PC maker, motherboard maker (if integrated on board) or sound card maker (if dedicated card).

are ur speakers working? if not then ur sound card is not installed. if yes.....then cheack whether ur mic is fine. u dont need any seperate installation for the mic. U Just have to plug it in.

in some cases the microphone might pe put to mute. just check on that in the 'Sound' control panel.
