When someone said we all needed to register with a particular site to avoid telemarketer calls, I took them at their word, I never had any because I have the national site that George Bush implemented. But they said that was running out. So I clicked on and gave the information, now I am starting to get calls from all sorts of goof ball telemarketers...I am really mad, folks. But guess what, it will be a long time before I get scammed again, I can shut down my whole yahoo account, I am not dependent on this for entertainment or anything else. There are some very nice folks on here, but the nut cases get harder for me to ignore.

Wow, thanks for all the response, I really wanted to try and help anybody else from getting into trouble and I did not know about the snopes site, thanks for that info.
Yes I do know about the bitter with the sweet, but was amazed at how much negativity there is on here. Ignoring it all the time gets tedious. And all you nice regulars who I have learned to identify, I know you are there. Thanks again, this sure received a load of response. Now I know what brings everybody out!!

In the future, check every email like this with www.snopes.com. They will tell you if it is real or not. I got this same email and checked it out with snopes and found out it was a scam. Always check emails out and you won't have to worry.

As a few of the others have pointed out, Moey, the person who posted this info wasn't scamming you. Promise! He was giving out information in good faith, trying to help us all, which he's done often before. Obviously something else has gone wrong, so maybe if you went back to the do not call site again you can clear this matter up.
I myself haven't been getting on Seniors much the past few weeks, so I don't think our paths have crossed. Hopefully we'll get to know each other better so you'll know that I and the others are being sincere in saying that the person you're referring to is very trustworthy and well-respected.
Take good care and I hope you can get your problem straightened out soon.

The info you received here was good - it was posted by a much loved long time regular and top contributor to Y/A.
I did the same as you and I have not been bothered.
there are many on this site that do not like the fact that you are blaming one of our own for your problem - it was NOT caused by the info you got here and besides that, did he reach through the computer screen and twist your arm??
I think not -- nobody forced you to take his advice, you chose to do so.
If you really truly think, after reading all of these answers, that he is to blame, then I would suggest that you email him and ask him about it - but I would also suggest that before you do that, you take several deep breaths and cool off. Nothing will be accomplished if you blow your stack at him - he is a reasonable man and will not tolerate abuse.

Google the "National do-not-call list". There is a phone number you can call that will put a stop to telemarketers. It works... I did it about 3 years ago and I get NO, NONE, NADA,ZIP calls. It might take 30 days for it to stop....but it will.
And, don't ever respond to anything on this forum - or any other forum... You don't know who's on the other end.

That is really unlucky - I am from UK - so what you are experiencing is not that familiar to me as far as the site you have implemented are concerned.
I wish you well in getting it all cleared up.
But I wanted more than anything to say - despite what some of your replies have intimated - actually there would be some people on here who would rather NOT see you disappear!
Just wonder why the folk who have answered you in the negative are just such a happy breed? Could the talk of nutcases be a little TOO close to home for them?
Carry on making your opinions heard on here - if you leave - as many of us have done in the past because of the negatives that get thrown so easily at anyone with a brain - what is left is just desperate.
I have returned after an absence of months - please - fight back to keep this site alive with intelligent comments and opinions.
Count to ten and then be glad you can - those that answered you so rudely probably cant!

I haven't been scammed on this site. I've been panhandled, but not scammed.
I have banned most pop-up ads on the computer, and I don't believe any Web site can prevent solicitation calls. Even the one you register with in the federal government is only good for a year, so what's the point?
We use an answering machine and don't answer if we don't know who is calling. Seniors on fixed incomes can afford an answering machine more than a monthly fee for caller I.D., it's just a matter of conditioning yourself NOT to answer that phone when you hear it ring three times.

What has shutting down your Yahoo account got to do with your telephone number? Did someone on YA tell you to go to the site?
If I get a telemarketing call, I just tell them that if they call me again, I'll report them to the FCC.
My mom used to say, "I can't talk now, there's been a death in the family." You'd think we had an aunt die twice a week!! :+|
GOOD luck.

Yahoo is rife with spy ware and the Internet with scam. I don't open any email unless I know the sender. I don't register for anything I haven't chosen myself.
I've learnt the hard way. Had my computer repaired once and they didn't put any temporary anti-virus system in it. When I started it up there was a screen alert that I had to download something essential and so I clicked on it. That was the end of my computer.

I am new to this site, so your news saddens me because so far I've really enjoyed myself, imparting wisdom etc.
If it is a problem with Yahoo, then I would contact them directly. I think they work pretty hard to keep this site in good standing.
As with any site, I agree, there are a lot of weirdos, immature children, rude people & outright flakes here. Trial & error has taught me how to avoid them.
Shut down your account & then open a new one under another name, that's about all you can do. And do contact Yahoo, I'm sure they can't police everything, everywhere, all the time.
Good luck !

As I remember a long term trustworthy member posted that and it WAS the National Do Not Register site which IS requiring folk to re-register soon. So I am not certain what the issue is with your problem, sorry.

Be so careful with this, I also learnt the hard way. Any suspect emails that ask for your details including addresses and telephone number, NEVER even open them, just delete them.
Also check the website if it "says " it is official. Compare the email address carefully. sorry you had a bad experience.
Now, when these telemarketers phone,do one of two thing.1) say politely, "love to answer your questions/speak to you but just on my way out, "sorry, have a nice day" PUT the phone down.
2) Ask then who they are, where there offices are, and THEIR phone number and tell them you will call back, or get slightly angry and ask to speak to the manager.
3) Do what chipmonk says :)
