Because when they're kicking the ball they're in a position that make them very vulnerable and unable to protect/defend themselves.

I don't think that should be a rule because when your running top speed to block a kick/punt/pat you shouldnt have to be afraid of causing your team a penalty. The real reason why it is a rule, is because the kicker is the smallest player on the team. When they get hit, even if there leg is up or down there is a big chance they will get injured. I think the worst rule is helping the runner.
Helping the runner:
An offensive player is not allowed to assist a runner by pushing or pulling them forward. .. To me that is just plain stupid.

To protect him, besides there is no reason to run into a kicker after he kicks/punts the ball. Its not like the guy is going to throw a block or make a tackle. Kickers are almost not football players so you cant really touch them

Why is the a penalty for roughing the passer? Same thing. Both are needed. Though the penalty has been diluted by some dives over the years, you're in a pretty vulnerable spot right after you kick... if someone hits your support leg wrong, you could be seriously injured.

He is in a totally vulnerable position and needs to be protected. The reason they differentiate between roughing and running into the kicker is to make it easier on the officials and to not overly penalize the receiving team when no real harm was intended or done.

Because when the kicker has his leg up in the air after just having kicked the ball he's very prone to injury if he gets hit.

Kickers are not REALLY football players. there is maybe one kicker in th NFL that can take a hit. (that would be josh brown or sebastian janikowski. there is only one kicker on each team and they cant risk him getting hurt.

Well let's see you protect yourself from a defender with your leg up in the air. The real question is why are there so many rules protecting those sissy QB's.
