Call the customer service number on the back of the money order, and they can run the issue number on it to see if its been cashed already or if its fake.

Check with whoever issued the money order. Your bank can catch a BAD counterfeit, but only the issuer can be certain.\

EDIT: A prior answer suggested calling the phone number on the back of the MO. This NEVER works. If I take the time to forge a money order, I can EASILY give a false number to 'confirm' the MO is good.

If you have not accepted the money order which you may believe to be counterfeit, do not accept it because it probably is.

If it is a postal money order, take it to the post office to verify whether it is real or not. If it is a money order that can be bought at the grocery store or a convenience store, take it to a bank. If all else fails, you can always take it to the FBI or Secret Service for verification.
