My 5 month old son has lost all interest in nursing during the day. I tried using his schedule, but it was making me nuts, he'd only eat at night and seemed to be up every hour. I've gone to feeding him a few bottles of formula during the day, which he happily gobbles down. I've tried nursing him in a quiet room during the day, but he really just seems to want formula. At night he doesn't care. He's now only getting up a couple of times in the night to nurse. I'm okay with feeding him formula during the day. However, can I maintain a milk supply for feeding him this way? I'm perfectly happy feeding him this way, provided I can nurse him still at night. The idea of doing bottles at 3am isn't very appealing!

My daughter did the same thing around that time. At 7 months she weaned herself completely (I was sad, but what could I do?).

My milk supply didn't suffer at all because of the time during the day I wasn't nursing. The body seems to adapt really well to what goes on with it - I didn't have a big problem with leaking and I didn't pump, but there was plenty for her at night.

Also, I took to sleeping with her at night during that time so I could nurse her on demand but still get the rest I needed. Once she was fully weaned from the breast, she didn't seem to need to feed at night so frequently so I wasn't having to get up and make bottles as often as I was having to latch her on to the breast.

It sounds to me like your son is comfort feeding. If you are worried about your milk supply dropping you could pump your milk to keep it up. But if he drinks formula during the day and loves it, then your milk supply should still be enough for your night feedings.

Do you have a breast pump? You can pump and put it in a bottle for him and it will keep up yur supply. Also, making bottles at 3am isn't as hard as people seem to think it is. My son's doctor tod me that as long as we used th filter on our sink that we could just make them with warm water.
