Louis was 20 when he became king in 1774. He was handed a kingdom deeply in debt due to unsound financial policies dating back to his distant grandparent Louis XIV. He did build up the French navy which stymied the British navy in the Chesapeake Bay in 1781 allowing Washington - with support from a good professional French army, to defeat Cornwallis at Yorktown on Oct 19, 1781.
Helping America may have been unwise, but we in America appreciated the help at the time. Louis ran up further debt aiding the American Revolution. French finances were at the breaking point. His wife's reported lavish spending in a time of shortage did not help Louis' popular image.
Louis only held power for 15 years. He lost real power in 1789 at the age of 34. He lost his head at age 38 in 1793.
He was a fall guy, but he could have been more conciliatory to the elected assembly in 1789. Closing them out was his pivotal mistakes, as this led to the "Tennis Court" assembly which would usurp his power and trigger the French Revolution..

Not that I ever heard. But an interesting story--allegedly angry revolutionaries stole King Louis XVI's embalmed heart out of his tomb and sold it to a wealthy English Lord, who then sold it to Reverend William Buckland, who's son supposedly ate it.
