I had my baby 6 days ago and have been breastfeeding every day (about 4 times for 20 to 30 minutes each time). I'm still just producing the colostrum, Shouldn't my milk have come in already?

You should be nursing a lot more than 4 times a day. You might want to contact the La Leche League group in your area for assistance. Their leaders are very knowledgeable and helpful.

The "normal" time is around 3 days. But it's also not uncommon for some mothers take longer. I know a lady that didn't get her milk in for 3 weeks. her doctors weren't worried. If having concerns go see your doctor. Also, are you feeding your baby 4 times a day. That's how I took it. A new born baby needs to be fed more frequently than that to sustain energy and gain weight. If you try feeding every 3-4 hours this also might help your milk come in sooner.

It can take a while for milk to come in. It's not uncommon for it to take more than a week. Are you working with a lactation consultant? A lactation consultant can make sure that you have an adequate latch. ABSOLUTELY do not worry and do not supplement. Your baby was born with reserves to make it until your milk fully arrives.

All that being said, just 4 times is not a lot. Your baby should be eating at least 8 times in a 24 hour period, sometimes more. You need to try to latch her on more. If your baby hasn't woken herself up, you need to wake her up to eat every 3 hours.

Your milk also doesn't all of a sudden turn on, it comes in gradually. You're probably already getting your milk, but it's coming in more gradually. Are you nursing everytime she "asks"?

I agree with everyone else, you should be offering the breast every 2-3 hours. Your breasts need the stimulation from suckling in order to signal to the body that milk production needs to increase.

Although this is uncommon, (and I'm not trying to scare you) make sure that you don't have any retained placenta. This can cause your milk to not come in. If you have prolonged heavy bleeding, go in for an ultrasound.

i think it can take up to 9 or 10 days... it should come in any time.
if you're concerned contact la leche league. they'll be happy to help!

also, you should be nursing about every 2 hours or so, at this age you'll want to wake the baby up to feed or they'll get too weak to feed properly.
