I've been wanting to take up a new sport lately. I wanted to pick something completely new that people can't imagine me doing. I narrowed it down to boxing, ballet, and rugby. I'm doubting ballet a little bit, because I'm not flexible...at all. I told my dad that I wanted to try boxing but he started telling me all these horror stories of losing your retina and brain damage. Is it true that your retina can fall out?
Do any of you know of any sports that are really different and not too dangerous? Currently, I play soccer and I'm a distance runner. I just need something that's not mainstream. Thanks!

Zimm : hey, thanks for the offer. But I'm out west in California. :)
I've paintballed before, it's pretty fun. And you're right, it doesn't hurt as bad as everyone says it does.

Don't box, your dad is right. Have you ever thought about Zorbing? You can read about it at http://www.blog.sophiesmountainoverlook.com. East Tennessee is the only place where you can currently try this, but it sounds SO DARN FUN!!! This would be the sport I'd take up if I could. I plan on staying down there just to try this. It is just too crazy! The writeup on that site is good. Ya gotta love New Zealanders!

Paintball.
If you're going to say it's dangerous, then you're completely mistaken. You'll get more injuries playing soccer than paintball. I can say that from personal experience. Having played soccer for nearly 8 years, I've sustained five times more injuries from soccer than I have in the 2 years I've been playing paintball. It's a great sport that combines individual athleticism with the mentality of playing with a large team.
If you live in NJ or somewhere within the tri-state area, then maybe I can show you some of the fields and what it's like to play this sport.
If you were thinking about taking up boxing, then you shouldn't have any problems picking up paintball.
Good luck!

Actually, I might suggest that you look at ballet again. Many athletes take ballet classes to improve on their balance and flexibility. It can be a great way to continue muscular training, while avoiding collisions and the associated dangers.
A few others that you might consider:
Yoga - brings inner peace along with muscle tone
Tae Kwon Do - teaches self defense and control
Gymnastics - helps with balance, muscle control & flexibility
Tennis - keeps you running, but adds the use of hands/arms
Golf - good for hand/eye coordination
Wrestling - good for strength training & coordination
Hope you have fun when you figure out what you're gonna try!

I'll second paintball.
Paintball is a great sport.
It's not to mainstream and it is addicting. I'm addicted.. I play tournament ball and it is what I do.
But make sure you have enough money on hand. It can get very expensive... I've spent about 2 thousand in the past year.
My paintball marker(gun) set up is retailed at about 1000 dollars. My previous marker setup retailed for 1600 dollars.
So be prepared to spend some cash.

Try golf...i know what youre thinking, golf is stupid and boring, maybe to watch but to play it is a different story, it is so relaxing and there is nothing like watching a shot land ont he green from 200 out. It is also a game for you can play for the rest of your life unlike boxing and rugby. And yes people do die in the ring...if you've ever seen Cinderella Man( True story) you know it happens.

I've heard that table tennis is quite fun. It's quite unusual, lots of skill and energy. Actually I'm going to try it myself.
An even more unusual one is Korfball - its a sort of like netball . This is the only sport that both sexes have to play. Good way to meet the ladies, or gentlemen also.

Go for basketball. Yes, vision problems and brain damage can result from boxing. What, you think those punches are weak?
