You can. You have free will just like the rest of us. But just like the rest of us, if you crash and end up smashing through your window because you weren't wearing your seatbelt, you best be willing to accept the consequences.

Companies, cities and so on have to protect themselves... it's like McDonalds having to put "Caution: Hot" on their coffee cups because some dumb broad spilled coffee on her self and sued them because it was hot.

You don't wear your seatbelt, you fly thru the window, you accept the consequences.

For some reason, Americans have difficulty with that concept.

Because Democrats know better than you do what's good for you. Since you're not smart enough to figure out the right way of doing things, they have no choice but to force you to.

If you wanted freedom, you should have voted Libertarian.

Or even, at the very least, Republican.

And I love it when people say it's about safety. Like those two 1/8" yellow stripes separating oncoming lanes of traffic (who, combined, will hit head-on at between 80-120 mph, and no seatbelt is going to save you at that speed).

If they were serious about making it all about safety, every single road divider would be at the minimum 10' tall.

Think about it next time you're driving down the road.

1/8" high. That's the divider between you and instant death from a distracted driver who crosses over it. A lot easier than you think.

Because...okay what about your 12 yr old daughter let's say. Do you think that Americans above 18 can make that decision for themselves and under 18 have to put on a seatbelt? That sounds reasonable. But hey no one wants to see a dude fly out of his windshield and die. Good luck, put on the seatbelt.

Easy, because in the off chance you get into an accident and have serious medical problems, you will expect the American public via insurance claims and lawsuits to foot your bill. So to cut down on unnecessary medical care that could be prevented by something as easy as belting up, it became a law.
Free American, nothing is free in America, we all expect someone else to pay even if we are to blame.

So if you get in a car accident you will avoid severe injury, stay out of the hospital, and keep insurance costs down.
And so if you get injured the auto maker can say the seatbelts were installed and you can't sue them for a faulty product.
I'ts not about controlling you, or keeping you safe.
It's all about saving money.

As a taxpaying American I consider such things as:
If you are injured in your car while not wearing your seatbelt, do you have enough medical coverage to ensure that you are going to be OK. If the answer is no, then you are depending on me and my kind to take care of you because of your stupidity. I don't wish harm on you, but I also don't want to financially help you if harm comes to you through your own actions.

I don't know the regulation in your state, but bear in mind that without a seat belt, and hopefully airbags, a crash or a sharp break would propel you in the windscreen and windscreen glass if far sharper and cutting than the flesh of your face. The shock may also crush your neck or damage internal organs such as the pancreas, the lungs or arteries to the heart by reaction. So... good luck.

Same reason you can't legally drive your own, fully paid for car after a night of drinking. It's a safety issue. Seatbelts are shown to prevent death or serious injury in many accidents.

Because it is the law. They had reasons for making the law. I also know that there are those who are in an accident and couldn't get out because of the seat belt, but if you think about it, they may have been through the windshield if they didn't have it on.

I believe that if it is your time to go, nothing is going to stop us from going with or without the seat belt. It would save you from going through a windshield if you had to stop suddenly. There are pros and cons to everything and there reasons for all the laws that are put out there.

Nothing is free. There is a cost for everything.
Get caught without the seat belt and being an American will cost you about $50.
