What does stone refer to with regards to weight?

I have heard of a 10 cow woman but have never heard of a Woman that is 10 stones.

Believe it or not but it is a serious question. I had never heard of stones being used in conjunction with weight until coming here.

Before adopting the metric system of weights and measures here in the UK we weighed as follows:-
16 ounces= 1 pound, (not to be confused with the currency pound ), abbreviation lb.
14 lbs. =1 stone.

It is the old fashioned imperial weight which is made up of 14 lbs (pounds). There are 2.2lbs in one kilo. Europeans are expected to use metric (kilos) but Americans still get to use the Imperial system.

ston in waight is the equvilant to 14lb its an easier way to say ur waight...
