When I had my son I was induced as he was 13 days overdue. After reading all the pregnancy and birth magazines I had everything under the sun with me. Most of which I didn't need at all!! Take some warm socks with you as your feet sometimes get cold during labour. I took music with me and never had a chance to listen to it. You're mind is somewhere else when you're giving birth and you probably will be so wrapped up in whats going on that you won't want to listen to music. Take a few things that will make you comfortable and a change of clothes. A hairband to keep your hair out of your eyes. I had a tens machine and I would reccommend it to EVERYONE. It helped me so much during the early stages.

Honestly, I asked the same question 3 months ago before getting induced and brought a computer, game boy, books...etc. I didn't use ANY of them. I was in so much pain and in and out of conscienceness that I didn't even care about keeping myself entertained. I did, however, use my iPod most of the night while waiting dilation. We used our camera too and I'm glad we did, cause I don't remember a whole lot before the birth. Lol.
DO bring a big comfy pair of sleep pants, a tank top (the rooms are either hot or cold, so you can cover up if needed) and some socks that you can walk around in at the hospital, but throw away before coming home. I was SO glad I brought socks. the ones they give you are so cheesey!
Ask for help while you're at the hospital!! Use the call button for anything you need!! It's the last time people are going to wait on you hand and foot for awhile, and they're there to help you, so use them!
And the last but best piece of advice I was given and used was...
as SOON as they let you get up and walk after labor, do a few laps. The sooner you get up and walk, the faster the healing goes. It's going to hurt after, no matter what, but get up and move.
Good luck! Eat lots of turkey and congrats on the baby!

I'd suggest music. The hospital should have a television as mine did, but I couldn't focus on it. My life was about to change and I wasn't focused on anything but getting the whole process over with. Music probably would have been a saving grace for me. My labor was over 14 hours and I stayed awake for over 30 hours because I didn't sleep the night before the induction. I was nesting big time and cleaning the house getting ready for baby. Do yourself a big favor and sleep well the night before. You may also want to bring chapstick and socks. My feet got cold often ..until I couldn't feel them anymore after the epidural. My lips were so dry for the next few days and chapstick would have helped. Good luck!

Most of the people I know found music distracting and irritating. I recommend the following:
lotion
a massager or rolling pin (sounds crazy but my mother got all of my sisters thru their labor by using it on their backs during contractions)
lip balm
Comfy clothes for afterwards
Clothes for baby
Pillows
Personal care items (shampoo, toothbrush, deodorant, etc)
What to Expect when Expecting book
Suckers or hard candy (my doc let me have them to keep from getting an icky taste in my mouth)
Magazines or books to pass time if you get the epidural, maybe even playing cards
Anything in the world that you find comforting is probably a good idea to bring.
Congrats and best of luck!!!!

I intentionally scheduled mine very early in the morning, when I'm normally sleeping, so I was able to nap a little when I got there. One thing I would do over would be to bring a stack of movies or reruns of my husband's favorite baseball games. He kept getting bored and going home (we live 10 minutes from the hospital), or going out for a cigarette, and people kept bringing him stuff to eat, right in front of me! Argh! Anyways, my first priority would be to keep hubby entertained and fed, otherwise you run the risk of kicking him out. I was very bored and anxious the whole time. I think I would bring something with constant stimulation, like funny or scary movies, a video game, or borrow a lap-top and talk to us the whole time!

lol, my labor had to be induced and it was the most long drawn out process. I didn't take anything, not even the cd of music i made. Just me and my hubby...and I tell you, after they broke my water, every time he made me laugh...well, it was the strangest feeling in the world!!! haha.
BUT, nothing ever happened after they induced so about 12 hours later I was taken in for emer. C-section...just depends on the situation.
Good luck!!!

I didn't pay very much attention to the TV or music. I was concentrating on the contractions. We did, however, pack lots of things to keep my hus comfortable, because he was there over 24 hours. He needed snacks, drinks, a pillow, etc.
I ended up c-sectioning both kids, and I highly recommend it. No pain birth, almost no scar now, no tearing or episiotomy. The drs. tell you that you'll get well much better with a vaginal birth, and that may be. But if you want to be comfortable afterwards, c-s is the way to go.

Make sure to take a comfy gown & slippers. You won't feel like wearing pants at first (at least I didn't lol) a change of clothes for you and the baby to go home in, Then the usual, toothbrush, toothpaste, brush, hair accessories...etc.
Good luck & congrats!

The one thing I didn't bring to my last delivery that I really wished I had brought was lip balm. Chances are you're going to be doing some breathing... and my lips got soooo dry! I sent my hubby down to the gift shop and he came back with some Burt's Bee's Cuticle Balm!! Thankfully they let him exchange it for the lip balm... Best of luck!

Definately comfy pants and underwear. And slippers. The music-not so much. There is just so much going on and you are so tired that I didn't need any outside stimuli like music. I let my hubby watch TV so he wasn't going so crazy though.
