It's November and people are already starting to talk about how much they want the summer to come back, so they can go to the beach. I can't stand the beach! The sun burns my skin, sand gets in my crotch and the water stings my eyes. I hate it so much.

I only like the beach when it's night time, or if it's grey and drizzly and mysterious. I can't stand it when it's extremely sunny, dirty and filled with oily sweaty people.

I agree with you. I do't like sunbathing. It is boring, hot and sweaty. I don't like sand in between my toes. And the whole scene of sunworshippers all around me turns me off.

I enjoy rocky, craggy beaches (not the commerical sandy ones). I enjoy them at night, in cool weather, in storms, and covered with snow and ice. I especially enjoy them when they are fairly deserted.

It's not weird at all. My dad hates the beach too because the sand just goes everywhere and there is no shade.

I love the beach--the ocean is so powerful and yet calming to my soul. I feel close to God at sunset on the beach...

But I can understand why some people hate it. Sand gets everywhere and you feel just sticky and yucky all around. I am sure to bring lots of snacks and cold drinks, several magazines or a good book, and I put on sunscreen BEFORE I leave the house as well as every hour once I'm at the beach. I also arrive around 1:30 or 2 in the afternoon and stay until around 7. It's only hot for a little while and I've noticed I come home brown instead of lobster red--the sun isn't so intense, plus it is not nearly as crowded!

No, you're not weird to "hate" the beach in that sense. The neat thing about coastal areas is that the "beach experience" can be many things to many people...and it's ok to like it in a variety of ways, not just in the commercialized "sun and fun Spring Vacation college partying" sense of it.

My favorite time to be at the beach?

When it's sunny but a little hazy, with a mild breeze...and early in the morning, say around 7 a.m. or even near sunrise. Most people I know wouldn't be caught dead at the beach at that time of day! However, for me it's a very peaceful time and it's also the very best time of the day to find seashells...and since there's not a lot of people, you can actually hear the sounds of nature. I discovered this living in California for nearly a decade. Back in the 80s, when my daughter was little, we'd often have breakfast on the beach at a San Diego area military base. I now live in Oregon in a town about 50 miles from the beach, but just this past April, I was able to enjoy some "me" time alone in Malibu at the beach... just me, the birds and the dolphins! Can you believe that I, a middle aged woman, actually skipped on the beach that morning because I was in such a reverie? I'm sure all those gazillionaires and celebs at Carbon Beach were probably just looking out the windows of their coveted million dollar houses and thinking "that girl is nutz" but I didn't care. It was simply wonderful...a dream come true...and I wanna do it again real soon. In fact, I like it so well, I actually wrote a song about my experience...it spurred my creativity that much!

But at any rate, don't feel weird...you define your ideal "beach" experience any way you want, even if it means just watching the beach from your house and never setting foot on the sand...

Like we say in the Northwest, it's all good :)

I live in a beach city. When I go to 'the beach' I go to a place about 15 miles south of the city, walk another 1/2 hour to 45 minutes where there are almost NO people. Then I strip down, swim, sun, read, sleep. No crowds, no noise other than the gulls and the waves. My wife and I go to 'the strip' at the beach just before Memorial day and just after Labor Day. There's an ANTI-CRUISING LAW now...if you pass the same spot TWICE IN 3 HOURS between 2 p.m. and 4 a.m. for a distance of about 30 blocks (Rudee Inlet to 31st St) (this is now including mopeds), you can get a ticket and the fine is up to $200 not including court costs. That happened to an out of town family. They drove by the cops to the hotel. The son and daughter drove to the drug store for sundries, then back to the hotel. Then the whole family drove by going out for dinner. TICKET!
Any wonder we locals don't go down there in the summer?
And the French Canadians LOVE it down here! Go figure!
There are signs along the boardwalk that show what you can't do. I think it would have taken up less room on the sign showing what you CAN do!

I live on the Gulf Coast. I can look out of my window and see the water. When I moved here years ago, I loved the beach.

I realize that I haven't set foot on the beach in two years.

All of my metal possessions rust away quickly including cars.

The seabreeze coats everything with a greasy film.

The tourists get annoying with their driving habits and the trash they leave, not to mention the DWI car crashes they cause.

And my bane...GOLF CARTS! It is considered a must have now days and they drive them everywhere. They let their eleven year old kids drive them around. I am scared to death that I will nail one of those little suckers because they are hard to see sometimes.

Sand gets eveywhere. Fine sand gets in the house. Seaweed piles up and stinks for weeks.

The beach is a nice place to visit maybe but I am moving to the hills!

Then just don't go. Doesn't matter what everyone else likes does it? I personally love digging my toes in the sand or walking the shore. I don't swim in it, that would freak me out. Too many weird things in the ocean. I like combing the sand for sharks teeth too, and I also love it when it's grey, drizzly and mysterious.

I agree with you. I hate going to the beach, although I love the water i hate sand with a passion. Just the thought of sand makes me itchy and angry. The pool is fine with me. So does this mean I am weird too?

The beach is one of the most peaceful places in my opinion. Nothing better than laying out drinking a rumrunner with the infinite ocean at your feet.

I don't burn really, but I can see how that would be annoying.

I don't like the ocean much, but I do like lakes surrounded by trees. I'm not much of a summer person.

The insects! The noise! And the sun! Not for me.
