Dani G won't get the credit that her answer deserves, but The Pixies were a huge influence on Bands like Nirvana. Frank Black deserves a ton of credit for the punkrock, mainstream fusion of the early 90's. I am a little older born in 1976 so I am going with Led Zepplin-Tons of hip hop beats came from John Bonham and no need to explain their influence in Rock and Roll

In my lifetime... Grrrrr
Probably Radiohead. They brought experimentation to the mainstream. No other band would have managed to get away with something like Kid A but Radiohead. And Radiohead certainly did influence a lot of the alternative bands today.
EDIT: Ops... forgot about Nirvana... hehe
