I'm having a problem with my 2000 W-Reg Jaguar S-Type - Basically, the heating system doesn't work. The A/C works, and all the rest, but when you put the setting to warm, cold air comes out. No matter what setting you use, it's still cold air that comes out, and I've tried various combinations to make sure that there is no other way to make it work. I'm assuming that maybe the heater is broken? Radiator? Some wiring somewhere? (Although I doubt it, since everything else works perfectly). Anyone else had this problem? And what happened? Thanks.

I didn't actually buy this Jaguar, it was given by my dad as a gift, but it can't cost that much to fix, can it? I'm a student in university, lol.

Thanks to all who have answered so far. I hope to take it to the local garage tomorrow, but was worried about the possible cost, and was hoping that someone may be able to enlighten me as to what may be wrong with it, so I can be prepared beforehand. :)

to me it sounds like the heater core.. but if you can afford a Jag you can afford a mechanic

Well, there are three or four things that may be wrong. The first, and most likely, is that the diverter mechanism that shunts air through heater core is not operating properly. This is essentially a damper that channels air through the heater core in one position, and deflects it away when heat is not required. If it fails to open, no air means no heat transfer.

The second is that the switch itself is faulty, and so the diverter is not recieving the current to operate.

A third is a bad or clogged heater core, but on the whole that is rather unusual.

Still another is that you may not know how to use the controls properly, which on the two Jags I own was not an intuitive design. On the dash of my VDP and XK8 there is a button for a/c and a button marked "auto." If heat is all you want (not temperature control with alternating heat and a/c to maintain a constant temperature), then turn both of those off. Then push any of the lower buttons that show air flow to head and feet, just feet, and so on. Then turn up the fan knob to the desired volume of air flow. Then set the temperature manually on the heat you want with the buttons with the red and blue triangle pointers. I find 70-72 degrees works well on the VDP, but the XK8, because of the convertible top, requires a little higher setting to keep the chill off.

i had a similar problem with my 1991 Jaguar XJ-6, Van De Plaus.

i bought a repair manual and researched the problem,
the model car i had has two heater fans.

it was an electrical problem that caused both motors to quit working.

Jaguars are not for the do it yoursellfers, which i am a hardcore one!!!.

and the electrical system and the placement of the heater motors and parts cost are major issues with a Jaguar!!!

and to have a dealership to fix this problem, well you might as well get a second mortgage and cash in you're life insurance policy's!!!

if you're temp guage shows that the temp is fine, you're belts are snug, youre thermostat is working, then listen or feel to see if youre fan motors are working!!!

at least if you can pinpoint the problem before you take it in for repairs will save you some money!!!

or just plug in an electric hair blowdryer while youre cruising in the cold!!!

ok got a chance to work on a 2000 s type myself and here some information that could be found on alldatadiy.com and Jaguar said this is a problem we have many failure so said guy ay Huntsville jaguar unplug the heater valve this cancel the relay to keep closed it should open. however if it does not open bad heater valve and the dealer will sell you one and so will after market. I replaced this one problem solved. Now we have to much heat problem located wires burnt on connector there for not power to keep closed rats no pig tail out there well either ford either. but Lincoln ls has the same connector on this heater valve so there were you get the pig tail. valve can be bought at amazon and other online vendors so good luck out there hope this was helpful oh the dealer want 201 for wiring harness and 326 for the valve.

hi we have a s type jaguar 2.7 diesel 2005 everything going well except we have just noticed that the heater seems to be stuck on 24 c turn down to 17 c and still runs hot. The passengers side vents seem cooler than the drivers side , air con works but the heater just gets to hot and wont change when turned down, maybe this has nothing to do with it but at the same time rear brake bulb blew! could this have caused a fuse to blow in the temp control

There are several possibilities with this one,
first make sure that the temperature controls are actually connected to the heater. Some times the wire can stretch or snap.
Secondly its possible that the heater valve is blocked with rust, this typically happens on badly maintained cars and can be cured by removing the valve and cleaning it out with a piece of wire etc.

The heater runs from what we in the trade call a heater matrix which is like a small radiator and which runs from the main cooling radiator, either could be blocked or you may have an airlock in the system. To eliminate the possibility that the radiator or heater matrix is blocked, have them removed and tested you your friendly local radiator repair shop; a test should not cost a huge amount. Unlikely to be wiring if the heater fan is still blowing out cold air, and nothing to do with the airconditioning.

If the heater matrix is getting hot then it is one of the flaps which control airflow over it.
If the heater matrix is not getting hot it is either blocked or the valve is stuck shut.
Get a good independant garage to do the diagnosis. Jag main dealers will charge you £70 plus VAT an hour

Its most likely cause is the control itself. They are controlled by a computer which controls the temp. The control unit is either faulty or inop. Unfortunately thats how new cars are now. It needs taking to a garage unfortunately. I should go be frienly to dad and get him to pay the bill.

You have, or should have, a vacuum controlled valve on the heater hose under the hood and near the heater. It is probably not working.

If you drive a Jag can't you afford to take it in and have it serviced at a dealership?
