x = [ 4 ± √(8) ] / 4
x = [ 4 ± 2√2 ] / 4

since the equation cannot be factored, we use the quadratic formula:

x = {4 +- sqrt. [(-4)^2 - 4(2)(1)]} / 4
x = {4 +- sqrt. [16 - 8]} / 4
x = {4 +- sqrt. [8]} / 4
x = {4 +- 2 sqrt (2).} / 4
x = {2 +- sqrt (2).} / 2
