Ok go

-2n +10 -5n =17?

-2n - 5n = 17 - 10 -------> it groups similar terms

-7n = 7 --------> this multiplying happens dividing

n = 7/ -7

n = -1
---------¦

Now, try "n = -1"

-2n +10 -5n =17?

-2(-1) + 10 - 5(-1) = 17 ----------> - x - = +

2 +10 + 5 = 17

17 = 17......it Good!
------------¦

Bye.bye

The first response you received is correct: n = -1
If you would like a more detail explanation, here it is.

-2n+10-5n=17 Original formula
-7n+10=17 combine like terms
-7n = 17-10 or 7 take the +10 to the right of the right
of the = then reverse the sign and combine
17-10 = 7
n = 7/-7 Take the -7 to the right of the = and
and divide the 7 by the -7. When you
take the -7 to the right of the = then you
change it from a multiplication to a division.
n = -1

Remember, to combine like terms and change the operation when you move it from one side of the "=" sign to the other.

Good luck.

I hope this makes it a little clearer.

well let's see...

-2n+10-5n=17..

first you need to take your like terms which is -2n and -5n....and 10, 17 ^.

Now I don't know if you need to subtract (I'm assuming you have to subtract since part of your numbers have to cancel out) or add the -2n and -5n...soo i will do it both ways for you.

-2n+10-5n=17

+2n-5n= -3n

orrr....

-2n-5n= -7n...

soo then you take your 10 and 17... and subtract the 10 from the 17....which is...

17-10= 7

then you would divide whatever your first answer was into this answer ^

sooo i gave you two possible answers for the first part...work them out and see what you come up with... hope i helped a little.

-2n+10-5n=17
(move like terms to each side of equal sign)

-2n-5n=17-10
(when number is moved to other side of equal sign, sign is changed. 10 was changed from positive to negative

-7n=7
(divide by whole number LCD-- largest common denominator)
-7n 7
----- = -----
-7 -7
(you have to remember to get ride of the negative number. always use LCD and choose the sign that will leave n "alone" as a free standing variable)

n= -1

-2n+10-5n=17

first, you have to combine like terms..
but first, you always have to add the opposite...so change all your subtraction signs to addition and change the integer of the following number
so you add the -5 to -2 and you then get -7n

-7n+10=17

next you add a -10 to both sides
-7n+10=17
+-10 +-10

then you get -7n=7

then you divide -7 on both sides..

and you get n=-1
! yay! lol if that was too hard to understand or you need more help...email me at

This is a joke right?? The answer is -1.

-7n+10=17
-7n=7
n=-1

-2n+10-5n=17
First, combine like terms(preferably the variables first):
-7n+10=17

Then subtract 10 on each side
-7n=7

Then divide -7 on both sides.
n=-1

Hope this helps.
