i was wondering, when does a baby's poop get like adults poop. just want to know what is considered normal so i dont start to worry for no reason- my son is a lil over 7 months and breastfed- i plan to breastfeed until about 12 months- it probably depends on what they eat but i just want the norm

It depends on how much solids they are eating, etc. Also what look "soft" in the diaper after it has been sat on isn't really "soft". Trust me when you are cleaning it up off the floor or out of the bathtub it looks a lot more like adult poop.

Remember you are looking at poop floating in water, you might be surprised how soft/squishable it would be if you were to sit on it etc.

I think its pretty normal to have the odd liquidy poop until they are at least 2 though, particularly if they breastfeed.

Have you considered just limiting breastfeeding to the house after 12 months? It really would be a shame to give up on it just because of other people. I know it can be hard though. I am sooooooooo sick of people telling me that I should wean my older son (20 months). Or that I should restrict how often he nurses.

Seriously if I wanted to I would, its like people think the idea hasn't even occurred to me. And this is family. I would probably loose it on a stranger.

As long as you are nursing their stool will remain soft. As soon as you wean, and your child has a diet primarily filled with solids, their stool will be harder. Ideally, a child shouldn't even have hard stools like adult pellets, that usually means that the child is constipated and needs to take in more liquid.

By all means keep nursing, you don't have to stop at 12 months if you don't want to. Your child's stool will remain easy to pass as long as you nurse.

ETA: HEY! Don't let the fear of what other people might think drive what's best for you and your baby. Lots more people than you think nurse past 12 months. In fact, the World Health Organization recommends until at LEAST two years.

There are going to be lots of decisions you'll have to make as a parent that might not be popular, you need to follow your heart or you'll always regret it. Check out the link below for more information about nursing past 12 months.

First of all, screw anyone who doesn't support you and your child's health; the longer you breastfeed the better!
The benefits don't just magically disappear!

Now as far as poop goes, my 15 month old still has loose stools that are thick and healthy.
So if I was you I wouldn't start worrying about anything.

My daughter is 2 1/2 years old and has hard stools sometimes but usually it's soft. I breastfed her until she was 15 months. She never had hard stools as a baby.

I used to babysit kids of all ages, and there really was a variety. I had twins to watch once, they were 1 months old. The girl always had the normal runny poop, and the boy always had hard poop, like adults. And they both eat the same things. Both were very healthy too. It has a lot to do with how they digest certain things, and once they're on primarily solids, their poop will get firmer.
