Humanity would need some sort of huge wake-up call in order to avoid destroying itself. Something possibly along the lines of Star Trek: First Contact, to show us a better way, that we're not alone in the universe, and there are better things to strive for than war and oppression.
It would need to be something on that scale to get all people in the world to begin to come together as friends.
