The writers are on strike because of contract issues. Basically they want more money. More specifically, currently writers are paid based on how well whatever they are working on performs(say at the box office, in stores etc). The issue at hand is they currently are NOT receiving royalties for internet sales and income. They claim they are entitled to it.
Thats the basic gist of the strike, though obviously its a bit more complicated(such as why tho other side currently does not want to give them royalties on internet revenue).

Writers are not getting a fare share of after market profits. Actors, studios & producers get a cut from DVD sales, internet downloads and the such. The people who basically make the show get very little. I think one of the things they are asking for is $.01 of every dollar of the downloads. The studios turned that down saying that is too much. The only ones who are not on the Writers side are the studios.

Its not only hollywood writers but T.V. and movie writers are on strike for the following reasons:
1-Writers want to re-negotiate the contract (percentage of loyalties) between them(wga) and production cos.because
it has not changed for 2 decades .
2-writers want to double their share of loyalty.
3-writers want a share of cd.&dvd. and internet sales of their work.
4-they are asking for very little and deserve to get it.

Because they only get 4 cents per dollar on what the studios make on movies and shows on the internet. They want 8 cents... and other things..

They want to get money from re-runs that keep being shown on TV for years, same as the actors receive. I forget what it's called.
