I see it as the preference of the person named Robert who goes by Bob. If he wants to use RD he will use RD. If he wants to use BD, he'll use BD. I will be different for different people.

I would always use the initial R if the person's actual name was Robert even though they may be called Bob.

My boss is Bob. Because his last name starts with S, he uses R as a first initial (BS doesn't look very good, really).

In most cases, Roberts use R and they use B, only informally.( Bob is just three letters as it is.)

It depends on their preference. Some go exclusively by one or the other. I know others that reserve Robert as their "formal name" and Bob as their "informal name." So, if that is the case, it depends on how formal you are with the person.

When using their initials in my writing up of minutes of meetings any Bobs are referred to as 'B' initial if that is how they are known in business. HTH.
