I usually give answers to fish questions, but today Im asking one.
I have a variety of fish in my aquarium. Theyre all community fish. The one I need help with today is a small neon tetra. It looks like something is eating him. Parts of his chest is gone, and he wont eat alot. Hes usually a vigerous eater, so I dont understand. I think he might have a parasite, but im unsure. what could it be and is it treatable. Do you need more info?

If this damage seems to have occurred all of a sudden, it's one of your other fish that is picking on him. If it has slowly occurred over days or weeks, it is probably a parasite or disease. Either way you need to remove him from that tank into another one by himself. It is very likely that he won't make it, but you can try to add Melafix, Maracyn, or Maracyn 2 if it looks like an illness and see if he can make it. You don't specify anything other than the location of his injuries, so I can't accurately recommend a specific one, but they give you some information on the packaging. At the very least, they can be used to help fend off infections.

Unfortunately, the location of the wound suggests that he's being eaten. If that's the case, you can try to ward off infections with the Melafix, but he may be too injured to save. Good luck.

Since it is a community tank it is hard to tell is another fish is slowly eating him because you did not say what other type(s) of fish are in the aquarium. Take a good look at your other fish and if it look like your neon tetra could or almost can fit in it's mouth or if one of your fish is being more aggressive that usual then you have found your culprit. I'm afraid I don't have an answer about what's wrong, but I suggest that you isolate it from the other fish. If you don't have another tank, float a plastic ice cream tub in the tank, partly filled with water from the tank. Then you can treat for fungus using methylene blue or your weapon of choice without affecting the other fish. If it is a parasite (fish louse) your fish won't survive but you will know that the culprit is in the tub and not your tank.

I hope it survives - good luck.

Could be fin rot. Ask someone at your local pet store, they usually have drops you can give. Sorry to say it, but i think that your fish is on his way....

Also, it could be other fish eating him or fighting him. I would take him out of the tank. Angel fish are usually really aggressive.

hi, it definetly sounds like you have a parasite problem. as to the specific name of the parasite i do not know. parasite problems are hard to pinpoint specificly because most of them intail alot of the same symptoms. try using a combination of a product called melafix and aquarium salt, as both those things are used together to cure a wide range of illnesses from parasites to fungus problems. good luck..

Do you have snails? Sometimes snails will eat the fish while they sleep.
