Shutting down is always a tell tale sign of heating or power issues.
Be sure that the fans on your computer are working correclty and your computer has proper ventilation. Running slow could be related to this.
Try a defragmentation, check your fans, and try to clear some things off the hard drive.
To defrag... start, programs, accessories, system tools, disk defragmentor

Go to the Start button and chose Run.
Type in 'msconfig'
Go to startup programs and check the box at the bottom to hide all of the Microsoft programs. Uncheck the rest of the boxes. (if you need to run any of the programs you just have to click on them)
What this does is it turns services from automatic to manual so they only run when you want them to. This will lighten the processors work load.
Go into the Control Panel and remove any unnecessary programs--that you don't use. Improves overall performance
Run a disk defrag (under Accessories->System Tools). You will need 15% of your hard drive free in order to do this. Improves loading/seek times.
Go to download.com and download AdAware Personal Edition and update the definitions and run and remove all of the bad things that show up. Gets rid of ad/spy-ware.
Go to Windows Update through Tools in Internet Explorer and update your computer completely with the neccessary updates. Fixes holes in the Operating System.
Update your antivirus software and run a scan. If you do not have one, go to grisoft.com and search for free antivirus software and look for AVG Antivirus free for personal use and install it and update and run it.
Aside from that, maybe uninstall the computer-killing 'Limewire'..... =) Good luck! Justin

Yes I have wanted to throw many computers out the window. Computers are nightmares. They just ain't build to work any more. They can't handle having more then few windows open.
But I had an Apple Mac before, it worked like a dream.

I´ve been there myself a million times. I´m a writer and I just hate when it turns off and I lose all I have written!!!! I watch a hilarious video on YouTube the other day and it made think of actually doing it. Look for "Bad Day At The Office" Might help you feel different.

Wait.... don't throw your computer .... Computer's my friend :)
May be I can help you out with your trouble.
Seems like most of the trouble comes from the opertaing system and a lot of programs run on it. And may be virus inside your Operationg System / OS.
If you use Windows, then try to re Install it with a new Windows and its drivers, then install the latest antivirus, and install other programs. Try to less the program loaded under your system tray - bottom right, beside you clock.
Hope this help your trouble with my friend :) Seems he need you to care on him :)

Probably a virus or just got the bad one out of the bunch. Make sure you are using automatic updates on it so you get anything that is being added. If that doesn't work, take it back or take it somewhere to get looked at.

Sometimes i like to mentally picture the computer as it bounces up from the ground (after tossing it out the window) ... and a split second after it bounces back up it shatters into a bizzilllllllion pieces!
