There is no difference in the instrumentation or the music played by the symphony orchestra or the philharmonic orchestra. The two names originated as a way to differentiate between and gather patronage for the London Symphony Orchestra (founded 1904) or the London Philharmonic Orchestra (founded 1932). A way to pick sides and choose your favorite!

Musician, composer, teacher.

I think you mean "symphony orchestra". I don't think there's a significant difference between a philharmonic and a symphony orchestra. It's just a matter of what they choose to call themselves. Both are large classical orchestras. Using the names interchangeably just makes it easier to distinguish one from another in the same city, so there could be both a Boston Philharmonic and a Boston Symphony Orchestra.

A symphony is an extended piece of music usually in three or more movements for a full orchestra. A philharmonic is a large or fill sized symphonic orchestra. Hoped this helped .

WHAT?.... a "sympathy orchestra"... he,he,he,... I've heard a few Symphony orchestras that were PATHETIC BUT sympathetic never entered my mind.

Seriously... it's size... a Philharmonic Orchestra is larger than a Symphony Orchestra.

I think by 'sympathy' you mean Symphony.

There is absolutely no difference - it's just a name, that's all. Historically, 'philharmonic' societies (music-loving societies) might have spawned orchestras from the society and the orchestra took the name 'philharmonic'.

One is not larger than the other - it really is just the name.

A sympathy orchestra makes you feel better when your sad because they will stop in the middle of whatever they are playing and will listen and address your problems. They understand your pain and are willing to do their best to cheer you up.

So basically the difference is a Ph. D. in Psychoanalysis.
