My son does not eat very well. He is underweight. He was born 2 months early and was growth restricted, 2 pounds 13 ounces. He was taken off formula 2 weeks ago and put on whole milk with 2 bottles of pediasure a day. However, he doesn't like to eat solids. His main source of nutrition is milk and pediasure.

How do I get him to eat and do you know any nutricious recipes I can feed him? He is not very interested and not willing to eat. He won't eat what we eat and I have to practically force food in his mouth. I don't like to do it but he sees an occupational therapist and that's what he suggests to do until he eats. Once the food is in his mouth he will eat it but it's a fight to get it in there. What am I doing wrong? I need good recipes. Thanks

I make French toast for my little boy. I use one organic egg, one piece of whole grain whole wheat bread, cinnamon, and some whole milk. I scramble the egg, add a dollop of milk and two taps of the cinnamon shaker. scramble them all. I slice the bread into 5 strips. I dip each strip in the egg misxture, then fry in pan on both sides. When they're all done, I cut each strip into bite size pieces for him, and let cool for a minute. Then I put them on his tray. They're the perfect size for him and he loves it! I avoid using sugar whenever possible and only use whole grains and organic prodcuts. I add the cinnamon for a bit of extra flavor that he doesn't get from the baby food (he's 13 months and still eats from the jar often). The whole cooking process takes about 8 minutes. It's so easy! Another quck and easy to prepare meal is scrambled eggs. I I scramble one egg with some milk and then fry it up. I continuously scramble it while it's in the pan. This ends with small pieces, all well cooked. He loves this recipe, too. I also will give him pieces of banana. I just slice half a banana into discs, cut each disc in half and he chows down on these.
What I've left out until now is that he hated every single one of these foods - but I force fed him (not really, just held the food in his mouth while he gummed it and figured out it was okay) a few times and then it was like he remembered that he liked it the next time I made it for him.
Hope I've helped! Good luck!

I know what you are going through,my son has a heart defect,he was not a preemie but the same issue with food,he had to have a feeding tube from 7 to 9 months olds.He is also 15 months as of the 18th.I was at the pediatricians this morning and he just weighs an even 19 pounds and is 29 inches now,at birth he was 8lbs 1 oz and 21.5 inches.Up until about 2 months ago I fed him alot with a 4 ml dropper,my son found this fun i think because he didnt like the spoon to start. You can try some jarred baby food with dropper like prunes, they are also high in calories, sweet potatoe, peas, etc,The normal baby food.I work with a dietician at Vancouver Childrens Hospital and for extra calories she had my adding 1 tablespoon of olive oil to all his foods,it is high in calories and is good for them but before you do this check with your doctor to be sure it is right for your baby. Now some food ideas.
Sausage.Chicken or Turkey is better than pork
Toast with some butter or jam
Freeze some yogurt tubes and cut them up or to start I gave it to my son with a dropper.
Bananas,grapes,oranges peas
Raviolis or Alphegettis, these are not real nutricious but see if he will eat them
Bear Paw cookies,they are soft
Cheese,if he doesnt like chedder of mozza try proccess to start
Deli meats are also fine
Soups, you can even make your own
That is all I can think of right now but if I think of more I will let you know,I know how stressful it is when your baby doesnt eat!The pediasure has all the vitimans he needs which is good,my son refused to drink it.Whip cream is as we know very high in fat and I give him usually 2 or 3 oz a day mixed in some of his bottles but again check with your doctor first.Everything I have mentioned here has been suggested by my dietician who deals with underweight babys and I trust her completly.Best of luck.
My son has been under the 3 percentile since he was about 3 months old.

I wouldnt make it an issue. Theres a difference between underweight and losing weight. Some kids are genetically predisposed to be extremely thing and tiny in early childhood- or clear through. Theres no law that says all children must be in or over the 50% to be healthy.

Make him food, keep all sorts of food available for him all day long, and leave it like that. He's 15 months, and thats plenty old enough to go get food off a plate and munch on it when he's hungry.

Toddlers are naturally small eaters, making it a battle of wills is just worse.

My friend is currently in this struggle, her daughter is 18 months and 18 pounds. She's healthy and developing perfect, but she's skinny as an Ethiopian refugee. She tried fighting it, and letting the doctors scare her into all sorts of programs and plans, and then she just got over it.

Since she's stopped making it a battle of wills (offering her food, and leaving it at that) her daughter is finally starting to eat on a more regular basis.

Iam not big on hype and panic. Babies are designed to grow and bounce back even from premature birth- its just what I expect them to do. When the pressure is off, it happens much easier.

My son has grew to alter into 15 months, and is going on sixteen months previous. He has in no way acted like that. Ofcourse, I easily have in no way incredibly had him around toddlers his age very plenty. i think that's a undesirable on my area because of the indisputable fact that I easily have in no way socialized him plenty. I do basically no longer extremely observe of many men and females those with little babies besides his cousin, who's under no circumstances around cuz his mom is "too busy". regardless of the indisputable fact that, if my son did act like that, he'd get a time out, and defined to that's no longer high quality, we don't Hit, or we don't Take Toys except that's Our turn, etc... He'd be cautioned to no longer do the particular habit which was propose, and then he'd be placed on holiday, and if he did no longer be experienced, then he'd bypass on a various holiday, and if that did no longer artwork, we'd bypass residing house, and appologize to you and your daughter. sounds like this diverse mom is lacking some parenting features...

This may occasionally make it sound like i'm a horrible cook dinner, however honestly, my daughter's favorite meals is grilled fowl (most each food store has them, already grilled and hot), simply as is, nothing with it. She is consistently hungry correct after I decide on her up from pre tuition, and if I do not need time to cook dinner, that's an remarkable factor to choose up on the way home!

My kids always liked broccoli, ground up in the food processor. Another thing I'd try is Spaghettos. Did he like to eat baby food? Maybe he doesn't like the texture of the "hard" food in his mouth. Baked potatoes mashed up?
One thing my kids LOVED are hobo dinners.

1 hamburger patty
1 potato peeled or not (make sure you poke holes in it)
a handful of baby carrots
wrap it all up in tinfoil and bake it in the oven at 400*until the potato is done.
The burger is sooo good, not dry and can easily be cut up into bite sized pieces. The potatoes are just like mashed potatoes and the carrots are tender.

Hope this helps.

why don't you buy that Big kids formula from enfamil?

And make sure you give him one bottle of that per day,

You see the trouble is , is that MILK is very filling,
and that could be the reason he isn't eating,

My son, was born at 7lbs but doesn't eat either,
they can it food aversion,

Basically i found that starches or breads ,is what he likes
I make homemade french fries in our deepfryer,
and homemade bread in our breadmachine,

macaroni and cheese, and dole mixed fruit cups

i would also ,not give him the milk until he eats his food first,

Forcing him, might work, BUT it can also make the food aversion WORSE,

I think that you need to give us more information, in order to really help you,

Like a diagnosis, or what the OT is treating him for ECt..

Will depend on the context really. Which is better as a snack - fresh fruit personally. It's tastier and gives you that little of sweetness. Which can be better as a snack if you are trying hard to lower back on sugar and lose weight vegetables

Normally what most mothers due to get nutrition in there food is add baby cereal to their milk. You can also try to make a puree for him, it what my mom would do for my little brother. I would suggest maybe black beans, once it it cooked put it in the blender so its a puree. Also, at walmart or babies r us they sell bottle feeders which you can put the puree in.

try things that have a little bit of a naturally sweeter flavor. start out with things like applesauce, fruits, vegis (carrots are always good, and peas)
my son is 16 months and was underweight, now he'll eat anything.
