Thanksgiving is the celebration of thanks.
This is how the story goes:
When the pilgrims came to America, the native Americans supposedly helped them live there and whatever, and they had a big feast.
And that's how we celebrate Thanksgiving, with a feast that has a turkey.
The turkey is not involved in the story, but everyone eats it on Thanksgiving anyway.
It's a time when we have bread, turkey, stuffing, apple sauce... One giant feast.
There is also a Thanksgiving day parade, which is on TV, so you can watch that.
There is also the annual Thanksgiving day football game.
Is that enough for you?

Thanksgiving is celebrated for the union of the colonists who first settled in the New World and the Native Americans.
The colonists were starving and ill and were left for dead by the British Empire. They needed the assistance of the native people living in the area in order to survive. And the Natives were needing the assistance of the colonists because they were warring with rival tribes in the area. They wanted the technology of the guns and other weapons in order to defend and protect their tribe members. The local natives were also affected by the foreign viruses that the Europeans brought with them on the Mayflower. They literally had no natural defenses/immunity against these diseases so they too were sick and dying.
As a peace offering they brought food to the table and decided it was best to work together instead of against each other; thus giving thanks for the hope of surviving.
The Revolutionary War against the British Empire did not come for about 100+ years later. Thanksgiving as nothing to do with America's freedom from over taxation or being part of the British Empire. Our celebration of the Fourth of July is for the original colonies (with the help of the French) winning the Revolutionary War.
There you have it! I should have been a history teacher.

It is supposed to be based on the history of the Native Americans/Indians helping the new Americans settle into their new homeland. However, the new Americans really killed off the Indians. The Chief of the Native Tribe that came to celebrate with a feast was murdered, and his head was put on display for 20 + years! Very sad. The history books are always written by the "winner," so this side of the story was never told. I learned while in high school.

Thanksgiving is when the pilgrims came over from England searching for land on the mayflower (a ship). Well, when they reached America they had said they had found this land but really there were Indians living there. So what they did was they took there land, and later would put the Indians on reservations. So the pilgrims made a feast and told the Indians this feast is here because of being together but they were really saying thanks for your land. (That's why we don't celebrate it for the pilgrims but we celebrate it for family coming together and enjoying being together. Also giving thanks to god for the food we have and family.)

A special day when we Americans thank God for His providence and the blessings He has given us. The day goes back to the pilgrims. When they had survived their first year in the new world, they held a day of thanksgiving to God and invited their new Indian friends to join them. They ate of the bounty that God had provided through their harvest and the wild game that was so plentiful in the area. It is celebrated in this country by having large meals and giving thanks to God.

It's apparently a national holiday where they give thanks for the food of the harvest season, and generally express thankful sentiments. It's on the fourth Thursday of every November in the US, and the second Monday of October in Canada, and is a time when families tend to get together. They usually have a large turkey dinner, in the style of our English Christmas dinners.

It's when we give thanks for all the good things in our lives, and eat lotsa turkey and get really fat.
It's also celebrating when the people came over from England and ate a big feast with the Native Americans, became friends with them, and swapped farming techniques.
