if you want to dance (hip-hop or ballet- tap - or jazz) do you have to be in really good physical shape? if you are out of shape how long will it take for dancing to get you back into shape?

Like for any physical activity, it is better to be in shape than out of shape. But there is only one way of getting back in shape that I know of. That is physical activity. You definitely should try dancing if it interestes you. Some movel will be too hard at first, but as you get more in shape you'll learn them.

Noone can tell you how long will it take you to get in a good shape. It depends on how badly out of shape you are and how much you dance/exersise and how healthy you eat.

No! You don't have to be in good physical shape to dance. Most dancers are, however there are several girls in my dance classes that are overweight, but you can tell that their strength and flexibility comes from dancing. If you want to get into shape by dancing, you'll probably have to practice for about an hour a day. But then again, it depends on other physical factors to determine how long it will take you to get into shape. Well, good luck!

It definately helps to be in shape. You have to have a lot of stamina for routines especially fast ones like jazz and hip hop. But also with ballet and comptemporary as well. Dance can help you get in shape as well. I know at my studio we do crunches and a lot of aerobic things as well to warm up.

i dont agree with that one person. it takes a lot to be able to do jazz and tap and even hip hop. with tap it takes a whole lot of leg muscle to keep doing it. i have been dancing doing tap for over ten years and my legs get all wobbly when im done with dance. it takes a lot. Same with jazz. you need to be in shape to do it with all the jumping and everything. dance uses every muscle in your body. and if your not in shape then how are you supposed to survive it? dance takes so much energy to do. You should be in shape. WITH EVERY DANCE not just ballet or pointe. but with tap, jazz, hip hop, ballroom. ANYTHING. BUT IT IS SO WORTH IT

no!! if you want ot dance en pointe in ballet, you must be fit and strong, but jazz, tap and hip-hop, not so much so. Intensive dancing will sort out your shape in a few weeks, but weekly classes will help, especially if you practise at home too.

Just dance a lot. As for myself I'm a break dancer. We constantly take breaks off because we get hurt or don't have enough time to practice anymore. It's an on and off thing but when I get back into practicing after a couple months of no practice I get winded pretty easily. If you want to dance and not get tired you're just going to have to dance frequently and get used to it again. To raise your endurance for dancing you're just gonna have to dance, start by going for set intervals and take breaks and work up until you can go for a long time with no breaks.

Agreeing with person who says you need to be in shape. Sure you can be out of shape and "Dance" but to truly perform you have to be in shape. Dance is all about lines and shapes to be able to achieve that you have to be strong and have endurance.
