no, there is no lead in rust. rust is oxidized iron. Lead is lead.

You can buy a product called "naval jelly" at a nautical store. It is a caustic jell that will eat the rust away. The problem is that it will come right back if you don't seal over it with something.

You might contact a bathtub refinshing service. It will cost a few hundred dollars most likely.

I would suggest that you scrub the rust spots with some steal wool before using the bath, but I wouldn't expect rust to be dangerous unless it enters your blood stream. Rust is just iron oxide and a lot of old cast iron tubs have rust spots and I remember as a child having a tub with rust spots as well and nothing ever happened to any of us. Rust is not lead. "The chemical composition of rust is mainly hydrated iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3.nH2O), and under wet conditions may include iron(III) oxide-hydroxide (FeO(OH)). Rusting is the common term for corrosion of iron and its alloys, such as steel." http://www.offroaders.com/tech/What-is-Rust.htm
Also, there is no such thing as a dumb question where your child is concerned. You should be fine, just try to keep son from drinking the water.
Good Luck

I would say no, not bad. There are businesses out there that refinish tubs, I had it done to a claw foot tub once and with excellant results. Now if you were talking about rust in a pan, then I'd say, don't use it to cook in.

First I would plug the drain and fill the tub with water. Then I would put in about a quart of bleach and let it stand over night. The next morning drain out the bleach water. Then I would clean it with a product called zud. Zud is like comet but cleans much better. Try it you'll like it.
