Trying to make wood log slices so I can paint on them but they keep cracking. I even tried waiting until the log dries out and then sliced it, but it still cracked. any suggestions?

log wasn't "dry".see if you can find a moisture probe and let the log dry to 5% moisture content before re-sawing it.

How long did you wait? Because that would be the best way, to my knowledge.
Depending on the wood and the conditions, it can take years for a log to fully dry.

Failing that, you might try sealing the slice. A good coat of Thompson's Water Sealant might do the trick. But I'm not sure what effect that would have on the painting of it. It might keep paint from sticking at all.

Air drying takes a long time. I have had a cedar tree trunk about 8" in diameter for over a year and it still does the same thing when "sliced". It is stored in my shed so I know it is not getting rained on and is in a spot where it has ventilation. I cut a slice about once a month and it is getting better, but still splitting.

you'd have to Kiln dry it... but a whole log will probably still split somehow no matter what.
