It never used to be until that crack pot leader of their's went from being a people's revolutionary to a brutal and racist dictator. The government took away the large farms from the rich, greedy, and white farmers. Although they probably deserved it, this has triggered an economic collapse across the country. Inflation has soared, and food prices have reached ridiculous levels. The government can no longer feed the people, nearly everyone is in poverty or in jail for dissent.

To answer your question, Zimbabwe definitely deserves to be considered a third world country and probably a failed state.

Zimbabwe is a good example of doing something that may have had some political appeal but world class stupid.

Right now, I suspect it's closing in on '5th-world' and heading for 'imaginary'. It's been way past 'third-world' for some time now.
