I am at 28 weeks of pregnancy. I am going to be doing my glucose test tomorrow. I was wondering why they do this test? Does it make a difference if the results come out possitive. I am getting tired of all of these test because I keep coming up high and then nothing. So far they thought my baby had downs, cystic fibrosis and irreglar heartbeat. I have had very many test done and they call came out to be negative. (I even had a 1 in 15 chance of downs :0() I don't know if I can handle another test coming up positive and then find out everything is ok. Do they require you to have this test done?

Gestational diabetes is something that is much more common than the genetic tests they screened for in early pregnancy. Many many women develop it, and left uncontrolled / undiagnosed, it can have serious consequences for both you and your baby. If you have it, some simple dietary changes are usually enough to manage it, but some women do need medications like insulin.

Babies born to mothers who are gestational diabetic can have problems at birth, mainly they leave the extra-sugary blood of the mother behind and can suddenly have big problems regulating their own blood sugar. It can be very serious. Babies can also be born very large, which doesn't mean they are healthier or more mature physically, just carrying more fat. It can lead to a difficult birth as well.

So these are some very real potential consequences that happen all the time. And you don't know unless you test for it.

No test is ever required, but I would hope you would be thinking about the best interest of your health and that of your child and make the sacrifice of your time and a little bit of discomfort of sitting through these tests. Good luck.

Yes they do, but its only to check for gestational diabetes. You have to drink this sugary liquid which looks and tastes just like flattened sunquist, then they wait an hour and take a blood test. If you don't have risk factors for diabetes, I wouldn't worry. Also, if the test does come back that your sugar level is high, that doesn't mean your diabetic, some women do get gestational diabetes when they are pregnant only. The doctor will treat and monitor you. But don't worry, you're more than halfway through your pregnancy and after this test, you'll have one more -- strep b which is done between 35 and 37 weeks to test for a non-symptomatic infection. All they do is perform a swab of the vagina and rectum.

Good luck, almost there!

They make you do this test b/c sometimes woman become diabetic during pregnancy (gestational diabetes). If you become diabetic and do not keep your blood sugar level you could harm the baby. The baby could grow rapidly and you can have trouble with delivery, the baby could become diabetic or the baby could die.

The first thing they will do will be a glucose test which you just drink this nasty drink and then sit for an hour and then have your blood sugar checked. If your body cannot metabolize the sugar then they make you take the 3 hour glucose test. That is when you have a blood draw, drink the nasty stuff, wait an hour, do a blood draw and repeat again for 3 hours.

To test for gestational diabetes. It's not a mandatory test...but...if you test positive, then that means all the sugar you're intaking is going straight to the baby and not being disolved. It can be dangerous because then the baby gets very big and unhealthy because his/her body won't be breaking down the sugar as it should be. If the test comes out positive, the doctors can help to repair the problem by having you follow a certain diet to make sure the baby's okay. You'll only have to follow this diet until the baby's born. This form of diabetes is over once the baby's out.

It's to make sure you're not diabetic while pregnant. I just had mine done on Saturday and I asked. Make sure to fast, my dr's office didn't tell me to but I did out of habit and turns out it's better if you do. I go for my results today. I know how you feel about the tests, me and my bf had to have the cystic fibrosis done too. But you know what I don't care, as long as I know they are doing everything possible to secure the well being of my baby....I will take a million tests!

I'm 28 weeks too!! With a boy! Congrats!

This test is very important. It is to check for gestational diabetes, which is a condition that occurs during pregnancy because of insulin resistance. It affects some women more than others. Basically it means you have high blood sugar, which can be bad because it can cause the baby to be large and have issues with their blood sugar after birth. If it is positive, you will see a dietician to talk about diet and how to keep your blood sugar lower. You will also have to test your blood sugar 4 times a day. But, it is very important that you do it.

the test is for diabetes, and yes it is important, if you have gestational diabetes, this will let them know that so that you receive the proper medical care which will help ensure your and your baby's safety for the remainder of your pregnancy and delivery.

I know it seems like a lot, I remember them taking vials and vials of blood from me the first time around, I had to go through the DNA test for CF also, luckily my hubby is not a carrier, but it's all worth it to make sure your baby is doing well and if there is anything wrong, to find out early to be prepared and get the right medical treatment.

You're almost there, you will be holding your baby before you know it, so try to focus on that and not to worry about these tests.

this test is extremely neccessary to take because it tells them if you have any diabetic problems that they could prevent or take care of because if you have gestational diabetes that can harm both you and the baby very much. You'll throw all of it right back up after you drink it and hopefully you get lucky and at least get the least worst tasting (tastes like flat sprite and the others like cough syrup). It shows the doctors how high your sugar spikes up and all that. This test is required so I suggest you take it. It's a sucky process tho. blah. >0<

They didnt require you to have any of of the other tests done, let alone this one. No one can MAKE you have tests done. They just make you feel like a horrible person if you dont. HOspitals have to treat you if there is a problem- but only if you let them.

THey test you mainly because 1 in 20 women have gestational diabetes of some kind, and in a very small percentage it has to be controlled by insulin and not just diet. Needless to say its an exuse to charge you or your insurance.

Iam not a big believer in preventative medicine. It does more harm than good in my life, I wont go into details.

I didnt let them do any tests on me. I did however do the 1 hour glucose very late, after 30 weeks, because I was feeling woozy a lot. But it was just hormones.

You make that call yourself.
