I just looove the sauna and feel that I could sit in there for hours!!
Will it do any harm to stay in long??

Sorry - I'm gonna disagree with most of these folks, although all of the signs at public sauna's talk about 15-20 minutes.

Of course, it all depends on the heat, and where you are sitting. The floor of my sauna is about 105 F. At a sitting chest level, it's about 155. At about 6" above my head, it's 185 or so. (Engineers are anal retentive - I have a bank of thermometers to quantify the temperature striations.)

I stay probably 40-50 minutes at a time. When I'm fighting a cold or flu, I stay longer. I do check my pulse rate and blood pressure and have a good idea of what I'm doing. I've also been doing this for 30+ years. Your body will tell you when it's time to get out.

I'm careful not to lay down after 15-20 minutes - that's a good way to get the nods. The last 15 minutes or so is devoted to massaging my legs and arms; the heat has done wonders for the tight muscles, and I'm focused on an activity to keep alert.

I drink water when I'm in, but I've found that doesn't increase my ability to stay in the sauna; it just rehydrates me quicker when I leave.

During the past 2 years or so, I've been experimenting breathing pure oxygen while taking a sauna. As of this date, I'm elated with the results. (I did post this as a question a few weeks back - nice feedback)

If you're going to push the limit, hydrate plenty before going in, check your pulse and BP, leave if you're feeling light headed, and DON'T GO ALONE!

Staying in too long can elevate your blood pressure too dangerous levels, causing you to pass out. You can also suffer from a type of heat stroke as well if your body temp is raised too high. Plunging into cold water afterwards is actually a bad idea because of the shock to the system and again the sudden change in BP.

And if anyone tells you just faining won't hurt you, remember this, all I did was faint when my BP dropped, and I landed just right on my wrist to tear up the ligaments and tendons for months. And whenever anyone asked about the brace, I had to say "I stood up too fast and fainted". Months of healing and embarassment because I let my BP get too low and then stood up.

And raising your body temp too high actually does damage your kidneys and possibly even your brain. This is why they don't let you leave kids or animals in hot cars. Saunas don't get that hot, but you get the picture. You pass out in one and no one finds you for awhile, well, it ain't the healthiest thing for you.

And of course dehydration is a biggie. I love the sauna too and like you could stay forever being nice and toasty warm, but I always bring a big old bottle of water and make myself leave at intervals to cool down slowly before going back in or dipping in the pool to paddle around... but always slowly change your body temp, never fast.

YES! It's not good to stay in extreme heat for very long. They usually say to go in only for 10 to 15 minutes at at time. You could faint or become sick.

If you stay in too long you will get weaker and weaker and eventually you will black out.

Make sure you have a few scoops of water before and after. You don't want to get kidney stones do you (from the extreme dehydration)?

um.. yes.

it's an extremely hot and dry environment, very different from what your body is used to.

you can dehydrate very easily, pass out and potentially die if you really mess yourself up.

try to keep to 15 minute intervals and limit to once or twice a day. drink some water while you're in there too.
