so I have run out of my stretch mark lotion and don't have $ at the moment to buy more.. not even palmers.. maybe in a few days I can.. but I was wondering if I can use my regular lotion in the meantime that has nothing in it that stretch mark lotion has.. it is lotion meant for high moisturizing for dry skin.. I am worried that if I use it somehow it would have the opposite effect of cocoa butter? like tightening my skin instead of promoting stretching? I may be paranoid, but would it be better than nothing? or should I wait until I can buy cocoa butter?
I am 36 weeks and don't have stretch marks yet, so I am hoping to prevent them as much as possible. *cross my fingers*
what would you do?

A lot of accurate and inaccurate answers here. Cocoa butter is NOT the best you can get. But NATURAL OILS, are the best.

If you use regular lotion with MINERAL OIL in it, this is blocking your pores b/c mineral oil molecules are too large to penetrate skins surface. So instead these lotions create a film on top of skin- never really moisturizing.

If you use regular lotion with LANOLIN, in it. Stop using it! Eww, lanolin is basically sheeps sweat extract and you don't want that on your skin do you?

NATURAL oils are the best. Lotions are ok. But lotions tend to be riddled with the above mentioned products b/c they are less expensive to create and sell than to have a full bottle of natural essential oils- that CAN penetrate skins surface and prevent over-drying, which causes the stretch marks to form.

Also, DON'T SCRATCH!! If you are itchy, that means you are not properly moisturized and you just need to rub (key word: RUB) more oils on your belly.

Good luck, and it's not all unpreventable, you just have to be educated on how to properly take care of skin's needs.

Before you start spending loads of money on different creams or surgeries, there are a few simple techniques you can try on your own at home. If your stretch marks are not too severe or aged, you can try taking a body brush and scrubbing the affected areas while in the shower. This loosens up the skin, and removes the dead skin on top, leaving fresh, more normal colored skin underneath.

The cheapest stretch mark treatment available is creams made especially for stretch marks. The most effective creams contain ingredients such as cocoa butter, lanolin and wheat germ oil. These creams actually heal and rebuild the damaged skin. While they may not be able to completely eliminate stretch marks, they may at least make the stretch marks fade to a barely visible scar.

I personally do NOT think there is any lotion or cure for stretch marks, it all depends on the elasticity of your skin, and genetics. But your 36 weeks already, just a few more weeks left, I wouldn't even worry about buying any Palmer's lotion, or anything else.

I used moisturizing regular lotion throughout my entire pregnancy and do not have one stretch mark.
I think they market those "stretch mark" lotions to lure pregnant women to spend more money but in my opinion regular lotion does the same thing.

I use regular lotion sometimes. I do have cocoa butter but not the stuff specifically made for stretch marks. I also have Eucerin hand lotion that occasionally I use. I think any kind is fine but ask your doc for his recommendation.

That is what I used to do when I ran out. But let me suggest something, instead of getting cocoa butter lotion, go to CVS, GNC or Riteaid and get some bio-oil, it clears up stretch marks like a breeze.Bio-oil really does work, I promise.Click on this link

Put some normal mosturising lotion after your bath when your pores are open so that it penetrates better in your skin and save those pennies for something else than a magic lotion as they don't really work anyway! All they do, is mosturise your skin and ease the itching (Am using one as well anyway cause you never know but everyone told me they don't work!!!).
Congrats on the baby XX

regular lotion is fine! lotion moistens the skins which allows it to stretch easier and not cause tears, which is what stretch marks are. using stretch mark cream has nothing to do with preventing stretch marks, just helping them fade after they are already there.

Bio Oil is supposed to be good. I think anything with Vitamin E will help, also. Mind you, stretch marks are beautiful in their own rights, so if you have some, don't feel bad. They're natural, and a reminder of the beautiful child you've given your man. Congratulations!
