you are "racist/ignorant" to want a doctor of your own nationality? I just read a post that mentioned this subject. So what do you think, is it ok to want a doctor who is the same race as you?
I will keep my opinion to myself because i notice whenever you say your opinion people just call you names and crap like that without answering the question. Thanks guys.

its ok to want a female doctor over a male because some are just not comfortable having a male "down there" all the time or any of the time unless of course its there man. Prefering your nationality could be racism, or it could be just wanting to be comfortable, im not a racist by any means, but some would feel more comfortable having their race down there or dealing with me health issues then a another race. Sounds racist, i know, but its absoulty not my intention, ill see a doctor thats qualified, and if i dont like the first impression, im gone. Its about being comfortable espesically when you are dealing with your health.

I can only speak for myself on this topic. Yes, I prefer a female doctor vs. a male one but race doesn't matter to me. I feel that the only reason why most ppl would choose a doctor with the same race is when they can't speak English well and need someone who speaks their own language. It's not always for ignorant reasons.

Asking for a doctor of the same gender ensures that the check up is as plutonic as possible. Because it's completely plutonic, and the doctor has a detailed understanding of your anatomy since she's a woman too, you'll feel a thousand times more comfortable. But the ethnicity of the doctor shouldn't affect your impression of their ability as a doctor. U shouldn't feel any more or less comfortable with a Black, White, Asian, or Latina doctor, because they all receive the same training (hopefully lol)

some people feeling having a doctor from t heir own background means they'll be more sensitive, but that's not strictly true. I'm a black female and I switched from a female doctor to a male dr. because this "doctor" despite being an African-American female was so insenstive, judgemental and rude...she acted like she thought she was better than everyone else. My boyfriend did the same thing because his (white female) doctor simply wasn't listening to him....and he was tired of getting the runaround. It was like both those doctors acted like they had something to prove just because they were women.

Now my man and I share the same doc...yes, he's an older white male, but he's a really sweet, caring yet professional person whose bedside manner sorta reminds me of Doc Baker on "Little House On The Prairie"...and neither of us plan to switch docs soon just because of some silly notion of political correctness. Go for the doc that treats you right, not based on gender or race.

It's amazing to learn Americans and Britishers and all these Westerners still have an issue with a male doctor touching a female patient's body. In India which is a much more conservative society, this concern NEVER existed.

A doctor is a doctor, male or female- his/her duty is to treat the patient which is a "subject" and a "sample"

My husband had an issue where most of the specialists in his HMO were of a different nationality then he is. He tried two different doctors but had a hard time understanding difficult medical jargon through thick accents. When he found a doctor that spoke English as their first language, he found a much better match & was able to actively participate in his own health care because of it.

This is a very interesting question...I have heard alot of people state that because they just feel comfortable with a doctor of their own race or sex. I work in the healthcare field...Basically I will choose any doctor that is the nearest to my house for time management purposes (husband, two kids, dog and a 40+hour job)...just as long as I haven't seen or heard about them in the news...LOL

I do prefer female doctors but I don't care what race she is. I'm not sure if it's racists to prefer your MD be of the same ethnicity. It may be just a comfort thing. People are different.

Because they are two completely different things.
First of all, many females want a female doctor because we have the same hormones, body parts and many women just feel more comfortable talking about their issues with another female. Many male doctors just can't truly identify.

People of all colors pretty much have the same health problems with a few statistics leaning toward one race or the other for proneness to certain ailments or diseases, but that's about it.

Big difference.

I think that its your body and your paying this person to take care of you. You need to feel comfortable with them and there are things that a doctor of your own race might suggest or say that someone who's not familiar with it might not say or know. So you pick whoever you want to girl!! :)
