I'm building a budget gaming system. Aiming for around $500. Going with e6750 2.66 ghz c2d, cheap case, 2 gigs of ram, etc. But I noticed I can get a good full sized mobo for $100 that have 800 mhz speed ram, but there are also cheaper micro atx mobos that have 667 mhz ram. Should I pay more for the mobo with the faster ram? I'm not building a high end rig I just want to play the classic games like half life and the stuff I've missed out on because I have a mac. Maybe in the future I will upgrade it to play crysis and stuff like that. What do you think?

Well your not going to be able to play high end games like crysis with $500, you should probably get an AMD athlon X2 CPU as AMD is generally better for Gaming, also to save money you could not get windows and use Linux, this would save you at least $100, I would recommend using Ubuntu Linux by the way...

If you are building it, www.newegg.com is your best friend. My current mobo is a 800mhz standard and performs quite well, at a cost of $60(its a Gigabyte M61...im not sure). You can get DDR2-800 memory now for under $40 per 2 GB kit. If you get an AMD AM2 socket motherboard, you can save money as well, because while AMD does not outperform intel right now, its much MUCH cheaper. So you get more bang for your buck. Even the X2 6000+(3ghz x 2 cores) is only $160, and thats the top of the line for the most part from AMD. The equivelant Intel performance wise is much more expensive. The lower end AMDs will cost a lot less. As for a graphics card, www.tomshardware.com, the VGA charts section will let you see how well a card performs in various programs. For that matter they have charts for CPU's as well.

So the combination of doing your research through www.tomshardware.com, and then reading the reviews and making purchases on www.newegg.com should help a lot.

You'll get decent performance between the two. Generally for gaming the bottleneck is with the video card more than the CPU or memory. If you use an on-board video card, then memory and CPU will factor in a lot more but even mid-range games will perform much better with dedicated video hardware.

Bewildered One - I'm all for Linux/UNIX systems but it really doesn't make sense for this person to do it. Unless they start messing with WINE, stick with Microsoft Windows unless you are sure the games you want to play have Linux versions.

Last year i build a computer with a dual-core 2.2gh, 2 gigs of ram, a 512mb radeon videocard, and 2 dvd drives for about $700. It still plays all the new games on med-high graphics.

substitute the Geforce 9500gt to a Ati Hd 4650 (~$50) or Ati Hd 4670 (~$70). (those 2 pictures card are much extra advantageous than the geforce 9500gt) in case you want an somewhat sturdy gaming computer, get the Ati radeon HD 4850 (much less high priced and effectual): ~$a hundred get the AMD Athlon II X3 435, ~$87
