Just a few years ago, the Huge Jackman movie "Van Helsing" was built up to be the coolest monster flick in the world. What a total let down! The blatant use of CGI made the 'monsters' look very synthetic & unscary.
I had a similar feeling after the 1st Spiderman flick. The character had no 'weight'. Whenever he was swinging around & jumping off buildings etc, it was So cartoonish looking.
But this wasnt the case back in the late 80s/early 90s when CGI was still brand new. Movies like 'Jurassic Park" & "Terminator 2" blew us ALL away.
But a lotta times gone by since then. CGI is all over the place today. We can spot em a mile away. Least I can.
I can't wait to see what the next big step in movie special fx will be....

Yeah, I watched E.T. last night. Unfortunately, it was the "enhanced visual effects" version where E.T.'s movements have been completely redone. Its facial expressions are way over the top -- I honestly don't see what was wrong with the original puppet thingy. Kind of ruined it.
I completely agree that films today seem so preoccupied by CGI, and just seem to want to use it for the hell of it. The scene in the second Matrix film where Neo is fighting hundreds of Agent Smiths (is it Smith? I forget...) -- ugh! If the scene can't be done without the main character being completely, and obviously, computerised then don't do it at all! Give me Jackie Chan any day.

I actually have a personal aversion to films that rely on use of CGI.
It mostly seems to be used in films that are based on books or comics, but no amount of computer trickery will ever match up to what our imaginations can create.
I watched that 'next step' movie The Polar Express {made using motion capture filming}. That was the most creepy looking film I've ever seen! It wasn't magic, it was menacing.
I far prefer the old-school approach. So what if the monsters are obviously an actor in a suit? At least there is something 'real' about it. And remember the genius of the guy who did 'Jason and the Argonauts'? {I recall answering one of your questions which included his work}. There was something really special about that sort of effect. The computer based stuff is just so souless.

so true...spiderman looks more like gumby his limbs are so cartoonish.
they have even started to CGI bugs in movies, like we cant tell. is it that big a deal to round up a couple roaches?
I still think the first jurassic park is one of the best CGI jobs to date. thats the only movie i feel like the CGI is really there. i have it on dvd and im still like "yo, watch out!"
