Advantages:
Machine guns allowed for a high rate of fire in situations that required it. They were able to break massed charges, or deal with individuals that were mostly under cover.

Disadvantages/limitations:
They were fairly cumbersome (especially in consideration of the speed of combat), so the crews would set up and be stuck. If the position were over-run, the machine gun crew would be killed and the gun captured. They were not the most accurate. They overheated. There were less replaceable parts, so the breakdown of a gun could put it completely out of action. They were not designed to withstand the harsh conditions on the battlefield, so they were more prone to breaking down.
