The clock hands move similar to the movement of the shadow on a sundial . When you look at a sundial, the early morning shadow points toward the left where 9 am would be and as the Sun moves across the sky westward, the shadow of the dial begins to move eastward in what we now call a clockwise direction toward 12 noon and then toward 3 pm . That is why a clock's hands were made to move in that direction. it is a remnant from early timepieces, the sundials. That's why it's called clockwise.
