Prolapse of uterus - a condition in which the uterus descends from its normal position into the vagina. The degree of prolapse varies from 1st degree prolapse, in which there is only slight displacement of the uterus to 3rd degree prolapse (procidentia) in which the uterus can be seen outside the vulva. Prolapse is aggravated by obesity. Diagnosis is made by physical examination. Pelvic floor exercises strengthen the muscles of the vagina and thus reduce the risk of a prolapse, especially following childbirth.

A prolapsed "womb" -- called a prolapsed uterus -- occurs when the uterus drops from its normal position in the pelvic cavity and descends into the vagina. In more serious cases, the uterus actually extends out of the vagina altogether. It is surprisingly common -- or at least, it's surprising how uncommon it isn't. Women can be predisposed toward a prolapsed uterus: having multiple children, having prolonged or difficult labor, being obese, these are a few of factors that may contribute to the (increased) risk. Surgery is usually required to correct it and/or prevent it from getting worse.

The most typical symptom of a prolapsed uterus is a feeling of fullness or pressure -- literally a feeling that something is falling out of you (and, in fact, that would be a correct interpretation, in more serious cases). There may be backache, and pain urinating. For someone sexually active, sexual activity of any kind involving penetration would be painful. It also may be difficult or uncomfortable to walk.

Diagnoses of a prolapsed uterus is not difficult -- all it takes is a physical exam. If your mother in law is even remotely concerned she should go in to see her OB/GYN. Regardless of whether it is a prolapse or something else, if she has any symptoms that would cause her to think she might have a prolapsed uterus, she clearly has something going on, and needs to see her OB/GYN, period.

Hope that helps.

a prolapse is where the uterus has become loose inside due to muscle weakness, the cervix can open up and the uterus can expel itself into the vaginal canal. this is the worse case scenario.
usually the muscular wall of the vagina collapses and can't support the uterus it then collapses in on itself making intercourse difficult. also the uterus impact on the bladder causing incontinence.
simple exercise can restore some of the strength in the muscles (pelvic floor) sometimes surgery is necessary followed by physiotherapy.
radical approach is a hysterectomy.
firstly she needs comfort and understanding as it can be very painful. secondly she needs reassurance. thirdly be proud that she came to you to discuss the problem. If she is not under a doctor she needs medical attention to help alleviate the symptoms
